Actually not strictly an upgrade but a fresh install of 7 over XP.

Any idea why?

Thanks for advice.

I would suspect a needed Dell driver was not installed. There is a long list of applicable drivers listed on the Dell site. Not sure what you need, that you may have not installed.

I would also check to see if their is a bios update which addresses the problem. Only update the bios if it says will fix the problem.

Just out of curiosity, from the original post (which gives almost no info whatsoever), how can you tell he/she is even on a Dell-based laptop?

Hi.
Thanks for the helpful responses.
Actually I am sorry to mention but this one's a Lenovo; I have 3 different laptops but the profile only allowed me to list one of them.

And this one's a really old one; Lenovo 3000 N100 Core Duo.

Let me know if I need to update the Bios or install a driver. I don't much know how to go about the Bios thing and also need to know where to find the driver.

Thanks for help.

Some laptops have an option in the BIOS to calibrate the battery - you might look for that. Otherwise I would go the Lenovo manufacturer website and see what they have to offer.

That said, I have installed 7 on a couple of Lenovos and not had this problem.

Have you done the latest Windows Update routine? Check Device Manager for flagged items too.
