Welcome to Sevenforums,

You might want to fully drain the battery before, then plug it again on wire powered to let it charge 100%.

You can drain it faster if you're on a switchable graphics system by choosing the ATI Performance.

To evaluate to battery performance you can follow this tutorial:

See if your laptop has a conditioning utility in it. Older HP laptops used to let you hit F6 or something like that as they booted, and it would bring you to a battery utility that would drain the battery completely, and perform a full charge.

You could potentially have a cell going bad in the battery itself? Have you noticed that the life of the laptop dropping significantly or had it get down to 20% and the laptop just shut off without warning?

It can be the fact your using the battery often, but don't let it drain enough then plug it again. Could be bad Power Plan management also.

There's a way i think to reset the memory of the Li-ion battery (if it had retain the last charge). Gonna try to find back that one.

Meanwhile try to manage your Power Plan settings.

Buy a new battery. Typically a "high quality" lithium ion battery will last 2-3 years. A cheapo lithium ion battery will last 9-18 months.

My wife's HP battery did something similar at about 1 year. I replaced it and it's working great now.

I am having the same issue with my nephew's Acer 5741-A. He's only had it since Christmas, but now it won't charge past 89% - the orange light stays on forever and never goes blue (which indicates fully charged). PParks said that a cheap battery doesn't last long - so do they usually ship cheap batteries with laptops and how much would a quality one cost, that would last for 2-3 years?

He has been using it while plugged in a lot, but surely that should just reduce the battery life, not cause the charging light to stop working properly?

A battery can die or have an issue at anytime, regardless of the quality. You just have a better shot at a long life with a high quality one...same with just about anything I guess. As for price, you need to get the part number and then do some research online. Based on where you are, how much a name brand one costs from the OEM, where you shop, etc...the prices can vary in range quite a bit.

Just remember to use the new battery instead of leaving the laptop plugged in all the time. That shortens battery life as well.

I think that's debatable. I've always run my laptops docked and always had long battery lives. I think using the battery for a short time and recharging will shorten the life.

I would recommend using the battery from time to time, and draining it down before recharging. That should keep it conditioned.
