Best Buy to close stores and cut jobs.

I avoid that place as much as possible. I only go there if there is something that I can't find elsewhere. It's pretty rare that I go near the store.

Where I am, everyone I know says the same thing, including me:

"I hate the people in there. Everywhere you look, there's a person breathing down your neck, trying to sell you overpriced junk."

Every damn time I go in there, there's some idiot, within 2 minutes of being in there asking if I need help. I can't tolerate that crap. If i'm looking through CD's, i'm sure I can figure out if you have what I want or not.
Our store has way too many people trying to sell stuff. There's at least one salesperson per aisle.
The practices that they pull on people buying computers is outright evil. I've never bought one there, and never would, but i've heard the stories about them putting crap on it before you leave the store. The Geek Squad thing is a joke also. I really don't need you to come to my house to put in a hard drive or a DVD drive. If I'm in there and buy something like that, there's a good chance I know what i'm doing.

They just don't seem to understand that people don't "Like" that kind of thing. Leave people the hell alone and they might be more inclined to go into your crappy store.

THAT is the biggest problem with the store here.....too many people doing nothing and getting paid for it.
Someone needs to smack that dumbass door greeter too. Most worthless job in the place. Cut out some of this crap and they could save themselves a bunch of cash.

I have actually gone into BB asking for help. :o On one occasion to ask where the wireless headphones were. That was good experience. Another time I asked for a TV antenna and mast. All I got on that trip was blank stare then a question; "what is a TV antenna and mask?". I said not mask, it's called a mast. The thing on which you mount the TV antenna. He said the TVs have cable connections--You need a cable subscription. I said I have satellite and I want an outdoor antenna too. On and on it went. I left thinking this guy is an idiot and he probably thought the same.

I ended up buying an antenna and mast at the local hardware store. Could have saved a 60-mile round trip and a lot of aggravation.

Oh yeah, Lord help ya if you ask for an antenna rotor.

Fry's baby my spot as for Best buy like everyone says very overpriced

Luckily I have a Fry's close by and a Microcenter not too far off.

But I hate shopping at Frys, they make you first feel like cattle with their checkout line, then like a criminal with the bag check.

I don't like Microcenter because they will put returned stuff right back on the shelf (I once picked up a PCI-E eSATA card, opened it when I got home and it was a used card and not even the right one - was SATA with no eSATA. I guess someone had pulled a switcheroo on them and they put it back on the shelf. They have the best prices on processors and if it is something you might have to return it is a good option.

Amazon prime is my goto now. Nearly unlimited selection, 2 day free shipping and a competitive price.

But in this economy where any extra money has to be spent wisely then why wouldn't you get the same items for the least money?
What is truly sad is that these big box retail stores put the small stores which specialized and had knowledgeable staff out of business. And now we are going to end up with an Internet only world where we cannot see anything first hand. For some things, like books and computer parts, I don't care. For other things like my bikes, I love having local bike shops with people who live and breath this stuff. Sure I pay more for the products, but I pay for the knowledge and the know how.

Hi there
Most of us on this forum usually have an idea of what we want -- and of course it's horrendous having to wait in line behind someone who takes 20 mins to ask questions like "The computer lid has jammed -- how do I open it" -- when you know EXACTLY what you want but you still have to stand in the same line before going to the checkout.

And what's worse -- being fairly large, "blondish" and well built (although am approaching the 50's) most security guards seem to have a sort of fear of me -- well they are usually tiny phillipino men who aren't used to nordic "giants" -- so usually 3 or 4 !!! follow me around everywhere in the store-- I just wish I could tell them that I probably earn in 2 hours what they get in 2 months between the lot of them so i really don't need to steal a rubbish set of bud type headphones costing 8 USD !! .

I've no interest in robbing their store -- if I wanted to I wouldn't walk in at the front door anyway !!. But it just demeans the whole shopping exercise.

Most MEN (and there must be a few women too --although I never get to see those ones) HATE shopping -- and stores have done NOTHING whatsoever to ease the "male pain" of entering one of these temples of pure torture.

So of course online stores have grown and thrived -- also you don't get forever pestered on paying say 70 USD on an "Extended warranty" for a product that only costs 120 USD in the first place.

Online shopping for me every time. Google in any case beats any store assistant hands down when you want info on a product.

There IS a case for the family store though still.

I bought myself recently still probably the finest Folding bycycle in the world -- and surpprisingly MADE IN ENGLAND -- a BROMPTON foilding bike. Even the Dutch respect these - but they aren't cheap.

The small store manager was absolutely magnificent and kitted me out with an OUTSTANDING bike that I can actually ride. -- Wasn't the cheapest --true-- but sometimes this type of product needs a real PRO to fit you out --and so far the bike has been worth EVERY PENNY.

(Beginning to undrstand now why team GB often does hugely well at Cycling in the Olympic Games !!).

Cheers
jimbo

Like some I only go there to 1)look at a product before ordering on newegg or amazon 2) I need something right then and don't have time for shipping 3) to use the bathroom. The overpricing and total lack of knowlage from the sales staff and even the geek squad just sets me off. I do feel bad for the folks that will lose a job though...

The only thing I have ever considered them viable for is tv's. Everything else I can easily beat the price on. Especially, as noted above, computer gear their prices are full on retarded. Even the small mom and pop computer shops around here can compete with them.

Of course the real problem here is the modern business model. It will doom everything to fail eventually. This need to constantly increase profit drives these bad decisions and then the companies have to do major downsizing for years... if they survive it at all.

Best Buy closings: steep cuts. More to come? - CSMonitor.com
Too bad, I have often went there to see an item in person before ordering online.;)

That is most likely the reason they are closing as people go to their stores to view the products and then order on the internet as they save a few dollars. Happens to a lot of brick and mortar stores.

This is the reason that lots of them go under.

Rich

The educated consumer can make out like a bandit, these days.
Unprecedented access to the internet, makes shopping and price comparisons a breeze. Gone are the days when you had to go to the store to make a purchase.
Give people more choices and once loyal customers, head for the exits.
Best Buy is no longer the best buy.

Not all Brick and Mortar stores will be shut down

Just the one's that are Basicly RAPPING Society that has no Knowledge of Electronics or Gadgets in general These stores prey on people who know squat about anything because there to lazy to read and learn which is Unfortunate for the upcomming generation

Technology is good but what Best buy is making you Pay for is them Having to provide Customer Service with people who have no Knowledge of what there selling

I myself worked in Retail for 12 years in TOYS
Even though i spent time Managing Employes and taking Inventory and Learning about new product you must and I SAY MUST make sure the customers get the best deal possible even if it means compete-ing with others lower stores and that would give them the edge

Another Thing about Best Buy there in store service is just lame if they respected Internet prices as well as Retailers That you can go to they would be up there

Instead they only compete Internet with there Internet store plus all the extra warrenty crap is annoying Unless you are a Complete ape or Uncivillized person there is no need for that crap

It says by Manufaturer 2 Year 3 Years what ever so what do i need BB warrenty for hmmmmm

If they would just cut the BS and get down like frys or Microcenter even Target and Walmart they would survive but with Greedy Suits in charge and more of For us then for them They all will be looking for a new Position soon

it means that some of their pricing is way out of whack with their competitors.

Radio Shack is still quite expensive, but I imagine they will stick around for quite some time, because with the small size of their typical store, and staff, I imagine that their overhead is fairly low. The only thing that would be expensive in their setup is the number of locations that they have available. That number may vary in the future, but probably never on such a scale as to draw a great deal of notice. I only go there when I have no other choice, not only due to their prices, but because they are usually so busy that I have to wait forever to buy most anything.

Some in the Mall and Other places can't really figure out who shops there because customer service is slim to none

I looked at their website today and if they can afford to knock off this much money on an item,
it means that some of their pricing is way out of whack with their competitors.

Camera - Regular price $229.99 - Sale price $149.99 - Savings $80.00
Camera - Regular price $249.99 - Sale price $172.99 - Savings $77.00
Camera - Regular price $179.99 - Sale price $109.99 - Savings $70.00
TV - Regular price $2199.99 - Sale price $1699.99 - Saving $500.00
TV - Regular price $1499.99 - Sale price $1199.99 - Savings $300.00
I never pay much attention to those kind of "sale prices", because they are not necessarily realistic. Most likely the regular price is based on MSRP, which is higher than most anyone charges. It reminds me of when I bought a controller card from Amazon, which they claimed to have a regular price of ~$200, for which I only paid a fraction of. But after checking it out at the manufacturer's website, the MSRP was only ~$90, and my card was an older version than the current one. When I complained to Amazon, the magnanimously gave me a whole $5 refund...as a credit on my next purchase.
