Best Buy to close stores and cut jobs.

Radio Shack.......I enjoyed looking through their free catalogs before they discontinued them, but that was ages ago. They came out with a commercial calling themselves "The Shack", I guess in an effort to create a catch phrase, but most people I'm sure, will still just call them Radio Shack. The last time I was in there, they were doing quite well selling cell phones. It was more like a cell phone store, instead of an electronics store.

I too, think they'll be around for a while. I think it helps, that they have their stores in and around malls, to attract youngsters interested in mobile phones. As a chain, they're probably doing quite well, but quietly.

The cell phones and cool home phones my mom bought a cordless phone package i guess there good for something lol

I can say they still have a large selection of small components and screws but the last time i was there was about 3 years ago

I for one don't find that Best Buy prices are really that outrageous. Obviously, some things are going to cost more than some random fly by night company you may find on the Internet. And they may cost a little more than an Amazon.com on certain items, especially if Amazon is running a sale and Best Buy is not. Like any retail chain, they are going to get you on things like cabling and such...but the same is exactly true for any retail store (CompUSA, Staples, OfficeMax, etc).

For example, Best Buy is running the Denon AVR-1912 Home Theater receiver right now for $399

Typically, the receiver does indeed sell for the $549, and that's true at most retail stores. I've seen that receiver for around $529 on Amazon from time to time. Amazon too has it for sale right now at $399.

So, really Best Buy isn't that over the top here. For only $5 more than Tiger Direct, I can have it 15 minutes from now if I drive over to Best Buy and pick it up. And it's the retail packaging version which might include a few extra pieces/parts that I could take advantage of.

Agree for the most part with pparks1. For the big ticket items they seem to compare well with the others, other than the fact they've got the sales clerks pushing those extended warranties. They don't seem to be as pushy as they used to be. Say "no" once and you may get asked one more time, whereupon you say "no" again. Circuit City clerks I remember pushing till you put your credit card away and were walking out the door...

Hard drives there also seem priced well, as well as lower than any of the three computer parts stores I frequent. Heck their used drives are as expensive as Best Buy's new drives.

But if I need a cable (sata/usb/whatever), it's gonna be at least 3 to 4 times more expensive as the little parts shops. Always go straight to the parts store for those. Two reasons I don't even bother with Best Buy on those items: 100% of the time it'll be more expensive and only 5% of the time they'll actually carry it. Plus the variety available is much better at the parts stores.

And Radio Shack, over the years, has had its problems. It is a wonder they're still around. I've probably purchased 10 items from them over the last 10 years. All small items. And I too, loved those catalogs. I would always pick up two or three as soon as they had them in the store.

I hate to see any of these stores shut down....

I found it interesting learning about the culture of the chinese and why Best Buy way of sales probably did not work in China.

I like best buy it's a nice "showroom" and when it comes to buying things right there and then! Sadly today's products are much more advance, that it would be way too expensive to train them on every new product being release so they know a little bit about everything. So when you ask them a specific question and tell them to compare A to B... they cant tell you anything.

However that is not just Best Buy, its all stores.

Who knows what will happen to them.

There's a second set of foreclosure nightmares on the horizon, this time it will hit the middle class much harder, and everything EVERYTHING is still propped up by the artificial interest bubble created by the federal reserve.

This tiny bit of goodness may not even last until the elections like I think the current president is hoping they will.

This is more then likely a trend which we'll be seeing more of down the road. More brick & mortars closing.

The last generation was raised that if you want something, you need to go to the store and get it. This generation has grown up with the internet & the convenience of being able to look something up, find the lowest price & have it shipped right to your front door. Granted, there are still things you need to go to a store to get, but as far as, say, books & electronics are concerned, that market is moving steadily towards online purchases.

People won't mind paying a little extra if it's convenient. That's what most of it boils down to, convenience.

I think they see you as a potential customer that although you don't plan to buy something they can convinced you. After all every customer is a another potential opportunity.

I work part time at a restaurant and my boss is really pushy and getting customers to sit down and eat even if they just wanna look at our place (unique). He tells us to be better at it too.

At the same time they've lost multiple sales with me because I couldn't get assistance when it was actually needed.
Doing one at the cost of the other is the stupidity here.

It's microcenter for me now. It's about twice maybe even three times the drive, but well worth it.
Not too mention the sales people treat me the same whether I show up clean cut in my Sunday best or I look like I just survived a zombie Apocalypse.
Which given the weird hours I'm often forced to keep happens more than one might think.

Also the only place on the planet that has ever let me actually return software.
(granted it did take a little doing)

Online buying is fine most of the time but there is still a need for "Physical Stores" for certain Items -- say you need that extra mini-usb cable or you've got a desperate instant need for a NEW / EXTRA disk drive then you want it NOW whatever the cost.

I agree that "Physical shopping" is usually a pretty horrendous experience

1) security guards following you around everywhere
2) if you are just Looking -- sales staff will often keep pestering you "Can I help you please" except when you really DO want to ask a question and then like magic there's nobody available.

3) and this irritates me almost most of all -- often you want to look at say the features of a camera or something -- then the devices are stacked up almost out of sight where you have to crane your necks to see it -- and PLEASE STORES when I'm looking at something like a LCD TV I WANT to see the BACK / SIDES to check things like how many HDMI slots, whether there's a VGA connector, the convenience say of plugging in a Computer when I've got the TV home -- I don't want to have to fiddle at the back of the set every time I want to plug a computer in. A Side connector is a lot more convenient -- some TV's have these some don't which is why it's nice to be able to check.

I don't want to see all these types of physical stores disappear -- what happens then is that you get large swathes of former shopping areas devoid of anything except incredibily tatty stinky fast food outlets -- anybody visiting London should look at what's happened to what used to be a bustling shopping area - Tooting Broadway -- now probably a solid 3 km stretch with NOTHING but fast food outlets on BOTH SIDES of the main street. !!!

However the stores will have to make themselves more customer friendly.

Apart from the queues one electronics store that seems to have a decent layout and very accessible displays is the Media Markt store in the Rue Neuf in Central Brussels -- always very busy and quite helpful ( and apart from Flemish / Dutch and French they speak English, German and Spanish too) -- not the cheapest but that's not essentially why you go there.

So I hope we don't get left with the wasteland that Tooting Broadway is with it's zillions of take away outlets and that small towns can remain vibrant -- but this can only happen if the stores try and make the customer experience as pleasant as possible -- especially for Men who usually can't stand shopping in the first place.
