I remember when I worked in the US in New Jersey and saw the American Civil War series on PBS. It was an eye opener to the carnage that was the American Civil War. The steadfast conviction of both sides was so well portrayed. Are the wounds still there?
I don't care if I digress a little.

It's quite incredible that this film still has the capacity to stir the emotions after 73 years.

It was a vicious war, of that there is no doubt.

Father against son, brother against brother, it ripped families apart.

Trouble was, both sides were convinced God was on their side and I think the wounds will be there for generations to come.

As for the carnage, it was unbelievable. Some years ago, we were on holiday in Virginia and we visited several civil war battlefields. One displayed a Confederate surgeon's tool kit and pride of place was a bloody great hacksaw used for limb amputations - without anesthetic of any sort.

My father was in the Bataan Death March, took a ride on the Hell Ship Tottori Mari, then spent 3 years in a Japanese POW Camp (Hoten) in Mukden, Manchuria. When they brought him back to the states. They carried off the plane, he weighed 72 pounds. I've got his Purple Heart Metal. He told me stories from that experience I will never forget.

I can just imagine if there were a real life "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers" today. They would bring out the SWAT, there would be all kind of stalking, kidnapping and harrassment charges brought against the brothers. How times change.

One of my favourite classics is Gone With The Wind starring Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh.

My wife thinks I'm mad for watching such an old film, but I'm just a sentimental old fart who likes to wallow in nostalgia.

That is a good movie. The only thing I don't like is that before the movie starts, you know who won the war.

That's quite true. Only trouble is, some people still don't believe it. We have some friends who live in St Cloud, FLA who still think the American Civil War hasn't ended yet.

In Texas we refer to it as the "War of Northern Agression".
