Hi, I'm new to this forum. I began a fresh install of windows 7 home premium 64 bit about 2 days ago and it still is not finished. I understand that this is supposed to take far less time, so I am hoping that someone can help me out here to figure out a solution for why it is taking so long. Let me know if there is any information that I left out that would be helpful.

I am installing from a USB. I used windows 7 USB DVD download tool to put the windows 7 .iso file onto the USB, then booted from my USB in the system menu upon startup as one regularly would for a reinstall. It might help to note that I went with a custom (advanced) install instead of an upgrade. In the custom install, I wiped my primary drive and removed each additional partition.

Hi there,

What you may find is that your USB device is not being recognised by the machine correctly (It may read it as a USB 1.0 instead of Usb 2 or 3) So a good idea may be to change which port it is connected to.

Also, can you ensure that the BIOS settings are set to boot from the removable device please?

Your bios should look like this

Let us know if either of these help!

I've been waiting for days for this to install and I'm currently at the completing installation phase, though this is taking a very long time. Is there a way to check bios without canceling the installation? I'd rather not exit the installation and have to restart the installation and wait days all over again.

Check the bios for what ?

Let it finish.

Windows 7 takes 15 minutes from start to desktop whether you use a dvd or a flash drive, they both take the same amount of time.

I would re downlaod the iso file and burn it to dvd and Gregrocker has a tutorial on how to use UltraIso to put the iso file onto the flash drive.

As windows sniper suggested, I am suppose to check bios to ensure that it is set to boot from the removable device. Also, it is surely taking well over 15 minutes, as I said, it had been several days and it is still not finished. The entire process is moving extremely slow, not just the completing installation part.

No, you don`t want to change the boot order in the bios to the flash drive, or it will just keep starting the install from the flash drive over and over again.

You use the one time boot key to choose the flash drive the 1st time, that`s it. There`s no reason to change the boot order in the bios.

The boot order if you have a dvd/cd drive should be

1) dvd/cd drive
2) hard drive

and that`s it.

Have you seen the pc reboot in all this time ?

If you have the usb device set to boot 1st and the pc reboots like it`s supposed to do during an install, it will just keep starting the process all over again and if it`s doing that, that`s why it`s been going so long. Like I said, Windows 7 takes 15 minutes to install.

Ok, I'll be sure to not do that. In any case, what can I do about this installation taking several days instead of minutes?

You probably have a corrupt downloaded .iso file. Start over immediately. I have installed many times via USB in less than 20 minutes. ;)

When I try to cancel the instal, because it's at the completing installation part it says cannot cancel the installation at this point, doing so might harm your computer or something like that. Should I manually shut down my laptop with the power button and restart the installation or what should I do?

I would see if it will finish.

Has the pc rebooted in all this time ? Please answer.

If it doesn`t finish in the next half hour I would start again, set the boot order to what I told you. Then use the 1 time boot key, F2, Delete, Esc whatever it may be, it will tell you at the bottom of the screen when the pc first boots up, it will be quick, so pay attention.

Then you choose to boot from the flash drive, it should be in the list, you may have to choose hard drive 1st then it should expand to show the flash drive, arrow down to the flash drive and hit enter, the install will start.

It so much easier to use a dvd, a flash drive can be quite tricky if you`ve never installed windows that way ;)

Like I said Windows takes 15 minutes to install, so you can keep staring at the screen or try again, it`s up to you.

Please re read everything I`ve written ( everything ) before you start again.

I had already begun the installation when I started this post. Anyway, I'm going to restart the installation with an official windows 7 installation disc this time. Just to be clear how do I set the boot order?

I already told you, go into the bios and set the dvd drive 1st and the hard drive 2nd.

Put the dvd in the drive and reboot the machine and when you see the words "Press any key to boot from cd" hit any key on the keyboard and the install will start.

What version is on the dvd ?
