Best Practice for SSD

I've just installed a new SSD to my system as my primary drive. All went well with help from members of this forum.

My question is what are "Best Practices for SSD?"

In other words:
> do you shut it down at night, or put the system in a sleep state
> are there new maintenance considerations
> data storage I suspect you'll tell me to store data on another drive

Things like that, just want to get the most out of my new SSD drive.

Really Depends how much room your SSD has.

Maintenence:

My recommendations would be:
1) Disable disk indexing on the SSD. If you want other things indexed, you can just disable it on the SSD only.

2) Disable Auto Defragmenting.

Run the WEI. This way it should automatically make needed settings.

You can still let it run on a schedule if you want, for other drives. Just make sure the SSd is not included in it.

To check, open the disk defragmenter. Go to the configure schedule section, and select disks. If the SSD has been removed from the selectable disk section, you are good to go.

As far as the rest of Maintenence is concerned... Nothing special you need to do. You can still run Ccleaner etc, as you would on any other HD.
Seven will Automatically TRIM the drive when needed.

Theres a lot of other tweaks. IMHO, its completely unnecessary. Most are meant to reduce writes to the SSD, in which I truly believe is way over-hyped.
Another debate is disabling Superfetch. I think things are faster with it left on. The SSD still is no where close to as fast as RAM afterall.

These are optional tweaks if you so choose, but not needed. Only the 2 listed above I would consider "needed"



Data Storage:
I would certainly install all programs and Apps on the SSD.

If space is OK, I would also keep the pagefile with SSD.
If Space is becoming an issue, you can make a small 500MB on the SSd and the rest on the Spinning Drive.
(I would only go this route if trying to save space. PF is better off on the SSD)

I would also at least keep Music, Videos and most Games on a secondary drive.
Your call here really.

I move the TEMP folder to a spinning drive as well, cleaning it out daily. Your call here as well. It will not hurt leaving it with the SSD.


Sleep:
How you choose to set up Sleep/Hibernate is your preference.
It will not hurt the SSD in any way if thats what you're asking :)

Take a look around your particular SSD's forum and you'll get a general idea on what's good practice and what's not for your drive. Also this tut here you could look at that has some basic considerations. For instance on one thing - general practice at OCZ for their sandforce based drives will be to have the drive set to never turn off in power management settings, and let the drive idle on the logon screen overnight a couple times a week to let garbage collection do it's thing properly.

All that I do with my SSD is disable the defrag process. I leave indexing and superfetch enabled.

As space is limited, my data is stored on a secondary drive in the system.

That's all.
