I've had some bad experiences with backup programs.
Can you believe last one I tried for some reason didn't backup .log files?
So I'd really like to get a good opinion on a windows backup program.

Anyways, internet propaganda is hard to sort through. What by reputable sources would be considered the best backup program out there.

I want something that can detect when an external device is plugged in. That was say I can have certain files that need to be updated on my usb key each time I plug it in backed up.

Windows Home Server / Full bare metal backup and restore / can drill down into the backup and restore single files if needed or the complete image from scratch on a new drive freshly formatted or any level between.

As to external device updating certain/single files if needed. You can setup a U3 Traveler from Memorex to do that.

I don't really understand what your saying..

Do do what you want is going to require a more in depth application bobtran named 2-3. If you can deal with less there are the ones most of us use. Acronis is popular as is win 7's own bu and restore. In my case im not a fan of win 7. I use Acronis and Ghost.

Hope this helps

Ken

Good advice if you don't want to run a home server. I'm just lazy and want the machine to do the work for me.

The folks at Acronis are saying that TI 2009 will not fully support Win7 but TI 2010 which is in beta and to be released after the official release of Win7 will fully support the new OS.

Anyone finding that TI 2009 has some bugs on Win7????

Yeah, I'm running ATI Home 2009, build 9796 on 32-bit ultimate, build 7260, and there continues to be a persistant "bug" with the inability to mount a saved image file in Windows 7.

Other than that, backup (both from inside Seven and using a CD) and restore (both from inside Seven and using a CD) appear to work fine.

Acronis doesn't work well for me either.

I use Paragon and Macrium - they work perfectly on my 7 x64 and Vista x64 systems.

I don't know if any of the popular 3rd party imaging apps. can be configured to immediately start backing up an external device when you plug it in - if that's what you are asking.

I had a weird desktop refresh-bug with Acronis, i always had to press F5 to see extracted folders and downloaded files on my desktop with TI installed.

Do you use the free Macrium? How is it...?

I've used ShadowProtect and Image For Windows for a very long time.
ShadowProtect doesn't support Win7 100% and there is an issue with I4W
with the image viewer. I got a free license from Paragon so I guess I'll stick with it.
Is window 7's backup system have the function to mount the backup and copy files?
