Bizarre errors trying to format 1Tb drive FAT32

I've just bought a Hitachi TOURO 1TB USB3 portable drive as additional storage for my HUMAX FOXSAT HDR.
The FOXSAT wants the drive to be FAT32 or EXT3, so I tried to format it FAT32 on my Win7 PC.

When I right clicked the drive, and tried to format, I was offered only NTFS or exFAT. So I resorted to the FORMAT command.

When the drive was plugged into my spare USB3 port, the format failed almost immediately, saying that the drive had become unavailable or invalid.

So I tried it in a USB2 port (the FOXSAT has only USB2 ports). I tried a FORMAT /Q and was told that the drive was too large for FAT32...

So, now I'm running a full format with FORMAT K: /FS:FAT32 and it has done about 5% in nearly half an hour.

What are my chances that this format will work? And what's that "too large" all about?

Windows will only format fat32 partitions up to 32 GB. So it will fail every time. You need 3rd party help.

yes correct as stated above. NTFS is better and is more secure so I would go with NTFS. There probably is 3rd party software out there to do it. But heh it is your device

HD Recorders don't read NTFS FAT32 is universall . Could be read on Windows and Mac OSes

Use Partition Wizard to format partition as FAT32

It's not the hard drive giving the requirement, but the device trying to read the drive. I'd prefer to use NTFS as well, but it sounds like the DVR needs a more universal format.

I went off FAT32 because of the filesize limit, so I downloaded a Linux Live CD, booted it on my Proliant Microserver and formatted the drive EXT3.

I don't care what format the drive is, as long as the FOXSAT HDR accepts it. It did, and I'm now sorted.
