Black screen before log in screen sometimes

Good day all,

I am trying to find out what the cause is. It does not happen every time but sometimes when I start up my Laptop, it show a black screen before the log in screen and I am unable to do anything.


I would need to press the power button (sleep) and then press it and then shows welcome screen. There is no mouse icon when it is in black screen mode



I am using Windows 7 enterprise

From Boot up and what I would need to do is press the power button which goes into sleep then press it again to see the display (log in screen) or else I be staring a black screen if I dont press the power button

Lets do the basic
1) schedule a check disk. Open a CMD window and type:
chkdsk c: /f
It will say that the disk is in use and if you want to schedule for next start = Yes

2) Run a system file check. Open a CMD window and type:
sfc /scannow

How long does this black screen situation last. Normally when Windows starts is shows the splash screen with Windows logo & then it goes to a black screen while programs are loaded, this delay depends on how many & what size these programs are. Then the log on screen appears.

You could check to what is loading on start up by typing msconfig in the Search box from the Start Button, then click on the Start Up tab to see what is ticked for start up. Generally you only need your Anti Virus program to be ticked.

It's a logical test. Won't damage the SSD.

Thanks, the black screen takes place before loading to the log in screen. I have waited 20 mins and it will show nothing. Only if I press the power button and again then it displays

I think you might have an intermittent fault in the SSD, which causes it to occasionally fail to start. You could check that the power & data leads are fully inserted & not loose, at the SSD end & the motherboard end.

It might be a good idea to make a back up image of the SSD to an external drive so you can save all your programs & files should it fail unexpectedly.

Did you try to boot on safe mode to see if it happens?
