hallo dear experts,

my system crashed yesterday due to gpu overheating:shock:. now it boots till windows animated logo but at the point right when welcome screen usually comes there is nothing now but a moveable mouse cursor on a completelly black background.

now i have following stuff to get back to normal: two very old restore points and a recently created macrium reflect system image but no repair disc. i will be very happy, if there is a way to use the image since i know that some of you prefer macrium reflect insted of microsofts system image solution. unfurtuntelly my restauration points are way to old (april 2011). ill be very glad to hear your suggestions:geek:

You can create the Macrium Reflect disc on any system running Windows. Just make sure you create the disc for the correct version of Windows and the correct 32-bit or 64-bit version.

If your external drive is recognized by the Linux version of Macrium, you have even more options and can create the Macrium disc with any OS.

Do you have access to another system, or friends who could let you use theirs?

thank you very much! im on my notebook now, which is running the same os. i did not know that the Macrium Reflect repair disc would be non-specific / not related to the os the repair disc will be created on..

btw, is it the same with windows repair discs? are they not system specific as well?

I am not sure I understand that question. If you mean the factory image recovery discs, those are system specific. The repair disc generated through backup and restore is only specific to whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit Windows.

Were you able to resolve your problems?

You can backup your data using the Macrium repair disc. If you create a system image, you can mount it through Macrium later and retrieve your data. That will give you more options for recovery.

I am curious about one thing: what happens if you start in http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/69585-safe-mode.html? Same behavior?

macrium didnt work for me (with an older version) and linux UI. i think i did not try to start in safe mode. i just opened the notebook, removed the hdd and plugged it inside my desktop to save my files.

Are you still getting to the black screen with just a cursor? Windows 7 boots to black screen with cursor before login screen after - Microsoft Answers may be useful reading.
You could now try this:
  1. Keep tapping F8 at boot time in order to boot into Repair Mode.
  2. Open a Command Prompt.
  3. Identify the drive letter for your System drive. It is usually C: but it could be D: or E:. It won't be X:. I will call it Q: for the purpose of this exercise.
  4. Type the following commands and press Enter after each. Make sure to type them accurately - do not take any liberties!
    path %path%;Q:\Windows\System32
    cacls Q:\Windows\System32 /E /T /C /G everyone:F
(this command will probably take a long time to run)
  5. Reboot normally. If your problem was caused by inappropriate permissions then Windows should now work.
  6. Click Start.
  7. Type the three letters cmd into the Search box.
  8. Press Ctrl+Shift+Enter
  9. Click "Run as Administrator".
  10. Type the following commands and press Enter after each of them:
    cacls C:\Windows\System32 /E /T /C /G System:F Administrators:R
    cacls C:\Windows\System32 /E /T /C /G everyone:R
