Boot Trace (from slow boot)

As cluberti said, the trace may not show useful data as it came after a BSOD - I have not been able to get a startup trace without error messages coming up at the end: I can avoid BSODs by removing the +DRIVERS part of the string, but I still cannot end up with a proper boot trace for some reason (please see the above thread for details of the error message I get).

This trace is the one gathered after a BSOD. I have another trace which measures 3.5GBs in size - no idea why so large, I guess part of the error ('can't stop trace'). Can't upload it anyway. The trace I do have is here:

If anyone can comment I'd be grateful. If the trace is no good for analysis purposes, any further ideas how to get a trace without the constant errors? I have tried at least 10 times now...

Martin, did you PM Cluberti a link to this post? He is extremely busy now with MS projects but will surely get to it asap. I wish I could interpret the trace for you but it is beyond my abilities.

Hi. Thanks for that - yes, I have PM'd him. Don't want to hassle him - will wait a week or so before I try again. Am now in the UK for a month, and the problem PC is back in Thailand, where I work, so there's no rush...

Two questions - one, have you disabled UAC? Second, are you logged on as a user who is an administrator, or with the actual local Administrator account?

Hi.. Yes, I do have UAC disabled, but I have had that advice before and running the trace with UAC set as recommended made no difference, I get the same error message whatever setting UAC is at.

And yes, my user account shows as Administrator in Control Panel/Users..

Odd, isn't it? (What is the missing 'user-mode logger'?). Hope you can advise further even so. Maybe I can get a boot trace another way?

Hmm - I am curious. What happens if you just run the following command - does this work at all?

xbootmgr -trace Boot -traceFlags BASE -resultPath C:\Boot_Trace

The PC doesn't recognise the command starting with boot_LATENCY.. is that what you meant (to enter the string into cmd (admin) as you posted?

If even BASE doesn't work, then either we have a registry permissions problem, or a buffer size issue. Let me test some things and post back.

Just to clarify - if I run the string:

I get the same error message as before at the end.

If I try to run the string as posted by Kaktussoft then I immediately get a message saying

boot_LATENCY+DISPATCHER+DISK_IO_INIT+NETWORKTRACE+MEMINFO+POWER+PERF_COUNTER+PRIORITY +REGISTRY+FILE_IO+FILE_IO_INIT_1_km_premerge.etl is not recognised as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file

Is the syntax OK there? There is no indication of a folder to save results, for instance, but I am not too familiar with the syntax rules of these scripts...

Thanks gregrocker, you just saved me a lot of time and frustration. Installed the the Performance Toolkit with no problems, gathered a boot and standby_resume trace, each a mile long. Trying to make sense of them makes my head spin. So I came here, the best forum I've found, hoping to upload them for interpretation.

Now, learning that interpreting the traces is beyond your abilities, well, I guess I'll just have to live with the slow boot and resume from sleep times. At least they don't make my head spin.

Thanks for the reply and the encouragement to have Cluberti check out my boot and standby traces. Unfortunately, right after I posted here yesterday, resigned to living with slow boot and wake up times, I deleted the trace files and uninstalled the Windows Performance Tool Kit.

Anyway, I've got nothing better to do today so I'm going to do a nice new clean Win7 install. If it turns out that I still have these issues after a clean install, then I'll gather the traces again and see what Cluberti can advise. You're right, having Cluberti here is a real blessing!

Well, oddly enough, my problem just resolved itself, after months. I was away for a month so the PC in question was not used during that time.

Then, although this may be coincidental, I unplugged a USB device whilst the PC was coming back from hibernation. This caused a BSOD and ever since the PC boots as rapidly as it ever did. I have a reboot timer script, which gives the time taken to get from Desktop back to Desktop when rebooting. Mine is now about 50 seconds, which seems pretty good to me.

I have made an image file of the working C and system drives, but I wish I could explain why the PC suddenly 'came good'.. Such is the world of IT, as we all know: Fine one minute, problems the next. At least it can work the other way round from time to time!

You can upload the BSOD file to our Crashes forum to ask what caused it. This will provide an important clue.
