BootMGR missing only when trying to run Windows Defender Offline

Trying to rid a Dell Latitude D630 running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit laptop of malware, trojans etc. I loaded Windows Defender Offline 64-bit on a USB stick, changed the boot order to boot from USB, but receive the error message "BOOTMGR MISSING Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart", making it unable to run the Windows Defender Offline. I do not get this error when I boot normally (from HDD), only when trying to run WDO from USB. Laptop is fully functional (albeit slow) when booting from HDD. Also, I do not have any of the install/recovery disks.

Any and all suggestions are welcomed.

ms26260, welcome to the forums. Sound like you need to make the usb bootable.use this

select try unlisted linux iso from the drop down, choose the ISO you want to boot, then select your drive letter. Then boot from the usb.

The file you want is the MSSS_Media.iso It is shown in the second pic.

How did you create the Defender USB stick? If done correctly, with the downloaded utility, it should be bootable.

I suggest you wait for Cottonball . He will help you remove the viruses . I wouldn't scan the PC with WDO.

Is WDO not reliable/effective ?

I personally don't find it effective. Do you might stating what virus you had or have ? What antivirus software do you have ?

I do not know what virus it has, the system bogs down and hangs a lot. This is a hand-me-down laptop just given to us, the previous owner was running an outdated version of ESET. Once we get the system cleaned up we will install antivirus software, any suggestions ?

Since its a hand-me-down I recommend you do a clean install for windows. For A/V I recommend MSE in and malwarebytes.

Follow VistaKings advice first.

I 2nd that suggestion, why even waste time on it, just reinstall windows.
