bootsqm.dat?

EDIT: since I figured out most of this stuff on my own... Just 2 things. Can I put bootsqm in a folder somewhere? And 2, if anyone doesn't mind explaining, what exactly IS bootsqm?

Hey, I'm wondering if someone could tell me what bootsqm.dat is? I mean considering it has boot in the name I'm assuming it boots something, and it's coming up as clean so I really don't care, but I'm a little curious about if this is something normal. The reaon I'm wondering is because I figure if it was an adobe file or a system file, it would be in a folder wouldnt it?

It's just sitting there on my local drive (c:\) without even being in a folder... Kinda bugs me. I think it may be on my xp as well... not sure.

Oh, and sorry if this is a waste of a thread, but I just want to be safe considering I'm using a beta AV right now (it's nice but idk how reliable it is, it passed my tests though), and I want to be sure I don't get an infection for another month or so when I get Eset smart security 4 (building this computer robbed me =(


EDIT: does nobody know about this? Should I just delete it to be safe?
To make this more... on topic, is it recomended to get ESET smart security 4, or wait until they come out with a W7 specific AV? Because buying eset in august and then having a W7 AV come out 2 months later would suck...

C:\bootsqm.dat ----> boot order file. Leave it alone.

This is not a file required by Windows for booting, it it useless for the boot sequence !

This file only gets created when you run some software that requires to chkdsk (Disk Check) when computer is rebooted, after the task is complete and the operating system is running, you can safely delete this file.

It doesn't replicate after deletion because it is no longer needed, it will only appear again when you will run another Disk Check at system reboot.

hope you will find this usefull, i don't like having unknown files lying around my hdd

Yes all soo AdvanceWindowsCare/DisKDoctor can create this kind of file it is safe to delete or you just can put it on hide.

Just curious, is there any way to prevent this – to me, stupid – 'bootsqm.dat' file from ever being created..? Of course, the act of deleting it is only a split second of action, but I'd like to keep my system clean and tidy, without bloat being created.

Hi,

I stand to be corrected, but my understanding is that this file is created/updated at every instance of chkdsk. Its used to keep track of which corrections, if any, are required to be made after the disk analysis.

So, the only way to prevent it from being created is not to run a chkdsk - not really feasible over the long term. It is completely safe to delete - only manual deletion is possible, there is no automatic deletion available.

Turn off your computer, throw it in a safe, never turn it on again. Clean and tidy for the foreseeable future. I'm being very serious by the way.
