Broadcom Netlik adapted assigning wrong IP

I have a problem which started appearing quite recently, namely, the wired internet adapter automatically sets my internal IP to 169.254.x.x and subnet to 255.255.0.0 instead of 192.168.x.x and subnet to 255.255.255.0 . The only workaround is setting my IPv4 manually.


I have a x79 extreme4-m motherboard with broadcom netlink ethernet adapter and the latest drivers installed. I'm using windows 7 ultimate 64 bit. Reinstalling the drivers didn't help.


This is NOT a problem with my router or its settings, as every other computer connects to the internet automatically just fine. The problem started occuring after i connected the PC to the schools network once.

My question is: How can i get the adapter to automatically assign me the correct IP?

And help would be appreciated as this is quite annoying.

The address in the first one is just Msoft's default IP when it can't pick up a normal IP.

It's not assigning you the wrong IP, it's showing that you aren't picking a valid IP from the router.

It may help to reset winsock or the TCP/IP stack.

Type the following two command into an elevated command prompt one at a time, hit enter after each one then reboot your machine.

netsh winsock reset catalog (reset winsock entries)

netsh int ip reset reset.log hit (reset TCP/IP stack)

Usually when I see this it means the router needs to be reset or the Ethernet cable is bad.

As it stands DHCP from the router isn't working or it was somehow disabled in the IPv4 settings?

Are the other machines connected to this router wired or wireless?

You can check if DHCP is enabled at the same place you typed in the static IP. Right click the adaptor, go to properties, go down to IPv4, click the properties button and make sure that DHCP is enabled.

If DHCP isn't working then you should check in Windows services "run box type services.msc" to make sure that DHCP client is enabled along with the other networking services.

It's the part that says obtain IP address automatically which means DHCP assigned IP's.

Despite the fact that other machines can connect I'd have to advise you to reset the router or just use a static IP.

I see no other reason for this problem to occur.

I have reset the router several times during this process, but the same problem is still occuring. I am puzzled as to what might be causing it.

I'd have to disable the anti virus software then perform a clean boot to determine if the problem is caused by an installed program or not.
