Hello:

I am getting the following BSOD on my main PC:

0x0000007b (0x80786B58, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

No other message is given except for the standard "stopped to prevent further damage"

Just before I did two things. I installed a PlayOn update (Watch Internet Videos on Your TV | PlayOn) and uninstalled my Realtek ALC888 driver in preparation to install an updated driver. The driver install software forces you to uninstall the previous driver, reboot, install the new driver. I also disabled my Ethernet connection to prevent Windows from searching Windows update and installing it's own version of the driver.

I have rebooted and did a repair which consisted of System Restore. I cannot boot to safe mode, it still gives me the BSOD. I am trying to get to the repair console to run my own tests such as chkdsk and to choose a different restore point, but the system repair starts automatically, and will not let me cancel at all. I have booted from my original Windows 7 DVD, and still cannot get repair options, it just starts working and will not let me cancel.

Please help. This system has so much on it I cannot replace. I just replaced my drives about two months ago, and they are seen by Windows Repair and my BIOS. I am sure it is a driver issue but i have no way to fix it without at least being in safe mode.

EDIT: Just tried switching the SATA ports, same BSOD. Tried switching to IDE mode, same BSOD. I am almost certain it is the Realtek uninstall, however to fix that I need to get to system restore. Last known good gives me the same BSOD.


Can I do a repair install when booting from the DVD or does that work only if I run it from within Windows?

The quick fix for this is to pull the drive, put it into another computer. Open the SYSTEM registry on the drive (NOT the HOST system you are using to access the drive). Change the registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\services\msahci\Start
and
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\services\iaStor\Start
and
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\services\iaStorV\Start

From 3 (or any other setting) to 0.

Some of the keys may not exist that is ok.

Exit the registry, shutdown and put the drive back into the original machine.

The machine should boot correctly.

Note: You can do this with a recovery disc, a *ix boot disc, etc., if you don't want to remove the disk from the computer. -WS

I tried your advice above. Booted my Netbook and loaded the registry hive, changed the keys, tried to boot main PC, same thing. I am almost certain that the issue is with the uninstall of my Realtek ALC888 driver. I am trying to figure out how to get into the system recovery console without it starting tests on it's own. I am pretty sure a system restore to the last point before the driver uninstall will fix the issue.

If you think this is because of the sound card and/or removal of the driver. Disable the sound completely on the computer then you should be able to boot the machine. Windows 7 will not load the driver if the sound is disabled. If the machine still does not boot then it is most likely not the sound because it is disabled.

Question: Does the BSOD state?

INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE - code : 0x0000007B

If so that is still pointing to AHCI or SATA or RAID drivers. Are you using RAID 0 or RAID 1? What is your AHCI card, Intel, NVidia, other?

The BSOD has no other info. Normally there is a bold text above the stop code like the one you posted above, but this time I only got the stop code and the generic shutdown message. This issue is fixed. I was able to remove all traces of the failed uninstall form the registry and delete the drivers after extracting the driver package and searching them out on my Netbook. I emailed Realtek, but they will not respond as per usual. I think I am going to not update my sound drivers.

Please could you explain how to alter keys on the mounted drive - do you use regedit and if so, how do you tell it to operate on the mounted drive and not on the host drive? I have a very similar problem with another machine and would like to try this

Alternate Solution

I have a client in a dell only enviroment that had this same error. I replaced a DC jack/daughterboard on a Dell E5500 and on startup found the same OP error. After some research, attempting the above solution all with no joy. Then I remembered since I pulled the CMOS battery during the replacement, previously set the time, I forgot to switch the SATA Operation in bios from AHCI to ATA. I have delt with this many times before though not exactly sure why it does it.

Hope this helps others with simmilar issues.

Having the same BSOD, I followed the instructions and changed the msahci, and the iaStorV "Start" setting to "0". However, the computer did not boot, and restarted at the same point in the boot.
So when it did, I pressed F8 and selected the "Last Known Good Configuration" option. "VOILA"-it Booted!!
Thanks so much for posting the fix--I had searched for hours and hours to find one! :')

If after that BSOD still appears - press F8 during boot and select the "Last Known Good Configuration" option
If after that BSOD still appears - it's hardware problem with your drive controller on mainboard and/or with your drive itself.
