Hello good fellas! I hope you will be able to help me out with my problem, because it drives me crazy!

The PC is mainly used by my parents (YouTube, Facebook, movies, etc.). The configuration was pretty slow (nothing was changed for 6 years or so), but was just fine for them. MSI motherboard with Intel® Pentium® Processor E2160 and 2GB of DDR2 RAM. Unfortunately, the motherboard has died (I guess so). So I thought it's time to build a quite-modern PC for them. I have left good parts (Samsung hard drive and Corsair power supply).

The "refreshed" PC configuartion is as follow ("+" indicates brand new part):
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-B85M-D3H (+)
CPU: Intel Core i5-4460 (+)
CPU cooling: provided with CPU (+)
Memory: GoodRam 2 x 4GB DDR3-1600 Dual Channel CL9 (+)

Power Supply: Corsair VX450W
Hard Drive: Samsung HD501LJ

and last:
Thermal paste: Arctic MX-2 1g (+)

After assembly, I have installed necessary drivers from the DVD (witch came with motherboard) and everything seemed to be OK. Unfortunately, after leaving PC for some time on idle, I got blue screen with error code 124. I had completly no idea, what could cause this problem. First thought was low CPU Vcore, which may be getting to low for stable work. CPUID HWMonitor (screenshot below) confirmed very low CPU Vcore values.

However, I have done a little more research (including sevenforums.com :) ) and downloaded BlueScreenView.exe, prime95.exe and RealTemp. I have read recommendation to perform a "Small FFTs" stress test for about 2 hours to see if there are any problems with CPU. I did start this test, but had to stop it about minute later, because RealTemp showed about 85 - 90 deg C on every core and there was no sign of stabilisation - temp. was rising and rising.

Intel Processor Diagnostic Tool 64bit passed the test, including one test "passed with warnings".

So, is it defective CPU? Or bad cooling? Or maybe something else I am not aware of? I thought that if I won't overclock CPU, I will be fine with Intel CPU Cooling.

Thanks for reading that much! Waiting for you reply!

And bonus question: I'm not native speaker, so if you could take your time and correct biggest errors in this post... It will make me happy :)

Welcome to SevenFourums,

So i have had a look at the Intel report:

Code:
CPU Frequency Test Passed with Warning!!!

The processor frequency could be affected by[U][B] [COLOR="red"]power management[/COLOR][/B][/U] features. In order
to ensure the processor frequency is not affected by a power management setting,
enter BIOS, load [U][B][COLOR="red"]defaults[/COLOR][/B][/U], and disable any 'Over-Clocking' or power
management features that may affect processor frequency. Also, set any
software applications which control power management features to default.

Prime 95 will stress your CPU more then The Intel test would 85 - 90 deg is far too high!

The Highest Temperature you CPU is able to reach without causing damage is: 72.72°C

Lets try some troubleshooting:
  • Can you Boot into the BIOS and set everything as default.
  • Can you look at RealTempGT and take a reading of the Temperature and post it on here Please :)

@HarriePateman, thank you so much for your answer!

All BIOS setting are set to their default values. This PC is not meant to be overclocked.

I am attaching 2 screen shots taken from RealTempGT - one when idle, second one when stressed with prime95 for no more than 30 seconds.

Edit:
Also, I think that it's worth to mention that (using CPUID HWMonitor) CPU Vcore is very... um... unstable. It differs from min. value ~0.3V up to max. value ~2.0V (!). And it doesn't matter whether Vcore is set to auto in BIOS or if I change it manually to 1.0V.

@HarriePateman, thank you so much. I hope it's something that can be fixed at home.

I have contacted Intel Support Team and they believe that the problem lies in the motherboard.

After giving them results from Intel Processor Diagnostic Tools:
Yes, according to this, the processor is overclocked, although it shouldn't be since is not unlocked.

There seems to be an issue with the motherboard.

I can tell for sure that the processor is not overclocking itself. I recommend you to check with gigabyte, because apparently it is modifying the processors stock settings beyond specs.

And answer for the question if they think that the problem could be caused by the motherboard.
That is correct. But the fact that a processor that cannot be overclocked, is overclocked, leads to that. No processor can be overclocked by itself. Only motherboard BIOS / software settings can accomplish that.

@HarriePateman, yeah but they do not provide phone number here in Poland. Anyway, I have created a warranty ticket and as soon as I get their reply I will inform you here.

Please excuse me for the quality of the image, but I had no idea how to take a screenshot here.
I have performed a Memtest86+ test and in the attachment you can find results... They are not making me happy.

Okay thats a very bad sign, one error is to many.

You need some new RAM, please remove one stick and run the test again that way we can see what RAM Stick is causing the errors, however it is possible that they are both faulty.

I hope not. The lowest and highest failing adresses are within the range of 2MB. I think only one stick (the second one) is causing the problems.

Oh boy, faulty RAM, faulty motherboard, maybe faulty processor. That's my luck. ;(

Trouble always comes in 3, however i think your processor is fine as Intel said its your motherboard but as you have recently bought all of this you will still be cover by the warranty.
