BSOD Cold Boot 0x000000124

What happens if you cold boot with just the Samsung module in?

I am wondering if the Corsair RAM is bad or incompatible with your system. I had an issue like this with a laptop with Kingston RAM. The Kingston RAM wasn't bad, it was just not compatible with my computer.

Hello,

The Corsair Ram I've bougt for testing, I've had that problem earlier... :(

Is there a way to test the motherboard or processor at a cold boot?

Thank you,
Alex

If you have had the problem before, it is likely the motherboard or CPU. Hard to say which. With a laptop, I am pretty sure they would replace both if you had it repaired. I assume warranty is expired?

BSOD code 124 is usually a lack of IMC voltage (usually called vtt or something similar in the bios) or DRAM voltage too low.

Can you post pics of your bios screens?

Probably the advanced settings screen, showing voltages.

Have you ran memtest86+ from the cold boot state?

Do this with the 2GB RAM card installed only and then again with only the 4GB card installed.
You can stop the test if you see any errors.

When you ran memtest86+ before was the laptop already warm?
Did you run a full 7 passes?

Your CPU core temps are high, What are you using to get the temps?
Use Real Temp.

You can test your CPU at the cold boot scenario with the Intel® Processor Diagnostic Tool

Hello,

I will try to run memtest with just 1 stick of ram.
Last time I ran 6h-7h of memtest with no errors.

I ran Intel's processor test, i've passed with 27 degrees below the maximum.
How can I test in cold boot ?

After many cold boots ... a 4 sec delay to boot spares me the 124.

I will post the cold boot memtest results.

Thank you,
Alex

Just start the test (which ever one) when the machine is 'cold', as quickly as you can, if it is due to the cold boot scenario then you should get errors right away.

It is due to the fact that the physical equipment is not 'warmed up' or the starting configuration settings are not enough to let the system run stable.
For example: idle voltage for CPU, integrated memory controller or other settings is not enough for the system to run stable, or the RAM may have borderline low voltage and can't function properly when it gets heavy use on startup.
Sometimes bumping the CPU, IMC or RAM voltage will solve this issue, but OEM computers don't allow you to change those settings. Usually the components will need to be replaced.

Hello,

I've installed Real Temp. Attached the temps, the max was with Diablo 2 and a movie running.

Ran memtest for each stick at cold boot. No errors for 7 passes.
Ran Intel's diagnostic tool at cold boot, no errors.

Sorry for the time taken taken, but it's kinda hard to test in cold boot state.

Should I clean the laptop ?

Thank you,
Alex

Yes, get a can of dry compressed air, from a computer shop, to blow out the laptop.

Those temps are not too bad for a laptop, my old Dell laptop runs prime95 torture test at 72/69°C.

My brand new Sony runs at 78-80 C... i7s really were not meant to have laptop cooling.

Just wanted to give you an idea of what it can get up to and still be safe, though 80 C is probably pushing it a bit.
