BSOD occuring frequently

Hi, my computer's been shutting off frequently the past week and just today I finally received a BSOD notice. I don't know if it relates to the shutting off problem, but I'll include it here:

I run Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit SP1. The original OS was Vista; 7 was obtained via an upgrade disk. My system is four years old. I don't have the retail disk.

The problem you're describing can originate from a variety of sources.

Testing the HDD:

1. Perform a Disk Check | http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/433-disk-check.html
2. Then Post the results following | THIS METHOD
3. Download SeaTools for Windows if you don't want to use a CD to test the HDD you can use YUMI – Multiboot USB Creator to create a bootable USB (instructions are found at the bottom of both pages).
4. If SeaTools for Windows is unable to recognize your HDD visit HDDdiag and follow the instructions.

Testing the RAM:

Test and Diagnose RAM Issues with Memtest86+:

• RAM - Test with Memtest86+

   Tip

• :info: Pay close attention to part 3 of the tutorial "If you have errors"
• :tip: Test the RAM with Memtest86+ for at least 7-10 passes. It may take up to 22 passes to find problems. Make sure to run it once after the system has been on for a few hours and is warm, and then also run it again when the system has been off for a few hours and is cold.

When the testing procedure is completed post a picture of the screen.


Your BIOS is very, very old.

Unfortunately HP doesn't offer an update.

I noticed you're using drivers not from the OEM's website, may I ask where did you get them?


Check for Overheating:

• Download Speccy and post a Screenshot of the summary window, one at idle and another while putting load on the PC using Prime95 for the CPU side and Furmark for the GPU.

Post back with the results!

Disk Check: The text file that was generated by PowerShell was empty, and there were no results for "Wininit."

SeaTools: Passed the short and long tests.

Memtest: Ran it on a cold machine. I can run it again on a warm one, provided it can actually stay on for a few hours.

Drivers: I updated via Wacom and wacommousefilter.sys seems to have been removed. RTKVHD64.sys has been updated. I honestly have no idea where I get my drivers. Whenever I needed a specific one, I'd just google it and click whatever was on the first page. I had no idea the OEM provided any other drivers so I never looked there. NOTE: I updated these drivers only after I ran the above tests.

Speccy: I wasn't sure if I was supposed to run Prime95 for the recommended two hours. And for some reason the temperature in Furmark never went past 0 degrees so I didn't know how long to run that for either. I only did 10 minutes. The HD temperature stayed pretty constant at 34 degrees.

You ran CHKDSK in read only mode meaning you either didn't open a elevated command prompt
or didn't use the /F switch, please run the command again, following OPTION 2 of the tutorial.

You should never install drivers not provided from the product's OEM.
I assume you have done so with the bulk of drivers on your system?

The CPU temperatures are in the tolerable range.
