BSoD on startup and awakening

My laptop is a Toshiba Satellite L305D-S5892. It came with Windows Vista but I wiped the drive and used Linux on it until about a week ago when I decided to stick Windows 7 to speed up working on cross platform programming. Usually it boots or comes out of sleep fine but it does consistently BSoD on me. I only have three crash dumps but it's done it at least eight times. The first BSoDs caused by errors in the network module but the latest three all occurred in different areas. When using Vista, I never had any issue with hibernation so I'm not sure what the problem could be even after analyzing the dumps myself.

Thanks in advance for the assistance.

I suspect your network adapter and/or modem drivers are causing the issue. I recommend updating them to the latest version.

Update these old drivers as well:

Do you still have driver verifier running???

Not anymore. I realized at one point that might have been the cause of a number of the later crashes but I'm not sure if I did it before or after the last one :P

It is in one of these DMP's. The second and third appear to be video driver, but if verifier is running it might not be accurate. I would still un-install all traces of the current video driver and download and install a fresh copy.

Let us know if you need help

The video driver is as fresh as possible. When I was running only Linux on this laptop, the proprietary ATi driver always killed my system coming out of hibernation so I eventually just started using the open source one since it's not like I'm rendering 1337 h4x0r engineering images with my laptop.

After freshly installing Windows 7 and using the OEM driver for ATi, it BSoDed after sleeping for the first time and I thought "Heck no, I am _not_ dealing with this on 'It just works' Windows too" so I looked around for a solution and found that updating to the non-OEM provided driver solved the issue and it seemed to do the trick.

Later on, I started having netio.sys problems after coming out of hibernation or sleeping, possibly related to the VPN I'm using so I disabled it but was unable to narrow down if it was the cause or not.

It shows no signs of power state failure (sleep/wake) but does indicate video driver. You may have the most recent but it may have become damaged.

You could just wait for the next one. I suspect you may have more in your future.

You can run a system file check if you think netio.sys is a problem
to do that type cmd in search>right click and run as admin>sfc /scannow

A Wicked Omen

You were correct; my system crashed after resuming from sleep and upon logging in. New crash dump attached. Sigh... maybe I should just go back to Windows XP or Vista on this machine.

FWIW - if the dump file blames the video driver, but you're sure that the driver is working properly - then the most likely issue is a hardware problem (most likely with your video card).

Try this free video stress test:
Try this free video stress test: FurMark: Graphics Card Stability and Stress Test, OpenGL Benchmark and GPU Temperature | oZone3D.Net
FurMark Setup:
- If you have more than one GPU, select Multi-GPU during setup
- In the Run mode box, select "Stability Test" and "Log GPU Temperature"
Click "Go" to start the test
- Run the test until the GPU temperature maxes out - or until you start having problems (whichever comes first).
- Click "Quit" to exit

The first step for fixing this (if it's a driver) is to ensure that the drivers are either updated or removed.
Here's the outdated drivers from the latest memory dump:

The FWLnk.sys driver is contained in the Toshiba Value Added Package for Windows Vista/7 (32)(v1.2.33; 11-09-2009; 43.67M) Unfortunately, it's dated 11/19/2006 - so there's no point in installing it.
I'd suggest removing the "Value Added Package" (if possible) to see if that helps things - if not, then you can always reinstall it.

The AGRSM.sys driver may be available at another manufacturer's website. To find out more, please go the device in Device Manager and right click on it.
Select "Properties"
Then select the Details tab
Then select Hardware ID in the dropdown box.
Let us know the 4 characters immediately after the VEN_ and the 4 characters immediately after the DEV_
We'll look up the exact specs at PCI Vendor and Device Lists and then will see if we can find drivers at one of the other manufacturer's websites.

In the meantime, please disable the device and uninstall it's software through Control Panel...Programs...Uninstall a program.

All in all, I'm not really concerned over these drivers - but having them out of the way will reduce the stuff that we've got to worry about.

I got a page_fault_in_nonpaged_area after installing 64 bit Windows and using driver verifier after I had another BSoD on wake so I'm thinking it might be a hardware issue. What are some good memtest utilities?

Additional tests for certain specific circumstances:

- Run the test until the GPU temperature maxes out - or until you start having problems (whichever comes first).
- Click "Quit" to exit
Try this free stress test: Free Software - GIMPS
Prime95 Setup:
- extract the contents of the zip file to a location of your choice
- double click on the executable file
- select "Just stress testing"
- select the "Blend" test. If you've already run MemTest overnight you may want to run the "Small FFTs" test instead.
- "Number of torture test threads to run" should equal the number of CPU's times 2 (if you're using hyperthreading).
The easiest way to figure this out is to go to Task Manager...Performance tab - and see the number of boxes under CPU Usage History
Then run the test for 6 to 24 hours - or until you get errors (whichever comes first).
The Test selection box and the stress.txt file describes what components that the program stresses.

Same issue.

This makes me sad to see that there is no solution for this problem. My wife has this exact same laptop, and I upgraded it from Vista to Windows 7 32-bit. Her laptop now crashes when coming out of hibernate or sleep without fail. I don't have any screenshots of the BSoD though. She also tells me that sometimes when it crashes that the laptop will display a bunch of white lines and then BSoD.

Could it be that the motherboard is not compatible with Windows 7? I suppose I'll just install XP Pro, because I really can't stand Vista.

I've removed just about every driver I could think of, run all the diagnostics and have reinstalled Windows 7 at least three times with no success. Maybe when SP2 comes out we'll have better luck but until then, you're better off downgrading. I wouldn't imagine it to be the motherboard or the firmware (updated that too with no success) but I could easily be wrong.

I don't want to use Vista either but I'm trying to keep my OS relatively modern. I'll at least reskin it to make myself feel better.
