BSOD on startup following CPU update

HI all,
I have just updated my "custom system" (about 6 years old with recently purchased PSU, Video card and memory) CPU from Intel core 2 duo E6600 to Intel core 2 quad Q9650 and have a BSOD on every attempt to start Windows 7 Home Edition 64 bit.

Computer details are:
ASUS P5W DH DELUXE mobo
Intel Core 2 Duo Quad Q9650
ASUS Radeon HD 5450 Video card
2x2G Kingston PC2-6400 & 2x1G Corsair Dominator PC2-8500.
2xMaxtor 320G HDD in RAID configuration. I also usually run 2 external drives for backup purposes but have disconnected them because of the BSOD's.

I also fitted a 'Cooler Master' Hyper 212 EVO to the new CPU.

I updated all drivers using windows update and updated to latest BIOS before installing new CPU. I kept the same video card and memory sticks that I was running without BSOD's with the previous CPU.

Over the past three days I have managed to get it to run without the BSOD , BUT this is what I have to do to get it running.-
Clear CMOS RTC Ram by removing power cord, removing backup battery and moving the jumper cap on the CLRTC pins for 30 seconds. I then replace the jumper to it's correct position, replace battery and power cord and start the power up process. The opening screen asks to "hit F1 for access to the BIOS config menu" or "F2 to load defaults and start windows". I use the F2 option and windows loads as it would normally. No BSOD, in fact I am using my computer to write this.
My troubling BSOD's start when I try to change anything in the BIOS settings, even the date and time whether through windows or by entering the BIOS through F1. I could probably put up with this situation as it seems to be running perfectly well, but unfortunately Windows Update and other apps that require a current time and date aren't working.

I have noted that my Blue Screen View data shows hal.dll+12a3b and ntoskrnl.exe+75bc0 as the main culprits, but I will need assistance to sort this out. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Hi jaykay50. This part of the post is mysterious .....

If you access the BIOS and it BSODs, it is safe to say that the BSOD is causing by either a bad BIOS or the motherboard itself.

Was the situation the same before you updated the BIOS? Let us know. It may be a very important information here.

BTW, in ASUSTeK Computer Inc. -Support- Drivers and Download P5W DH Deluxe, I am not seeing any windows 7 compatible download. What wxactly you have done for the BIOS update?
View attachment 294376

Your BSODs are stop 0x124, and it can be caused by a bad motherboard/BIOS.

BTW, what does Prime95 say? I think you have used it?

Thanks for your quick response Arc,

Firstly, I selected the "VISTA 64" BIOS #3002 update from the ASUS website for my Windows 7 Home Edition 64bit. I have also tried the XP 64 bit version and have also rolled back to version #3001 but to no avail.

I may have misled you with my initial post in that I believed that the problem only appear after any change to the BIOS default settings, I now believe that it has something to do with the restart process of windows as it always runs through the POST process without mishap but when I get to the windows opening pages it starts BSOD's. They do not appear at the same place each time either .

These BSOD have only started since I upgraded my CPU and fan. I would get the occasional BSOD with my old CPU but a restart always fixed the problem.

I have run Memtest86+ overnight with no failure and also Furmark 1.12.0 without any problems. I am yet to run Prime 95 in it's stress test stage but will be doing so as soon as I finish this post and let you know how it performs. I have also run sfc /scannow and run the windows repair programs from restart and original CD with no change to BSOD's.

I pulled the motherboard out today and stripped everything from it and cleaned with a pressure can of electronic cleaner. Replaced only the essentials and started windows using my previously documented starting procedure using F2 button. The BSOD came when I restarted windows after about 30 minutes of running without any problems showing. This time however I managed to get to my desktop page before I got the BSOD.

I don't play games on my computer hence the low quality Video card in it.

I have run SF Diagnostics again after the cleaning and have attached same.
Thanks for your time and effort
jaykay50

PS. I can still run Windows for long periods of time without BSOD's by using the F2 start procedure that I mentioned in my original post. I can even change the time and date without effect.

It appears that the BSOD's only appear in the following situations:
1. After I have entered BIOS during startup (Delete key) and set my 'usual' settings that I have been using for the past 5 years, and
2. When I shutdown & restart from the windows environment "START" button (eg after a windows update).
Thanks

I have a few questions for you:
Have you checked and are you certain that this motherboard supports the Q9650?

The BIOS is not OS dependent. It is quirky that you can only get to the list of available BIOS versions by selecting an OS, but if you look you will see that the same BIOS versions are offered for every OS listed.

The most current stable BIOS offered is version 3001. Are you running that? If not, what version are you running?

It is important to Clear CMOS (CLRTC) after changing a CPU. Your description of the Clear CMOS you did is missing one important step: When you pull the CLRTC jumper off of pins 1&2 you must then place it on pins 2&3, then press and hold the power or reset buttons for about 30 seconds to discharge all power from the motherboard. Then replace the jumper onto pins 1&2 and power on. I always go one step further and switch off or unplug the power supply when doing a Clear CMOS, because it is important to discharge all power.

Let us know what you find.

Prime95 results

Hi all Thanks for your inputs,

I ran Prime95 overnight but don't know how to interpret the test results. I have attached the file if someone would be so kind as to interpret the results for me.

TVeblen-
Yes I am running Version 3001 as from yesterday when I noticed that Version 3002 was only a Beta version. Unfortunately, the rollback has not produced any changes in my frequency of BSOD's.

I also checked out the support data for the motherboard and found that it does support the Q9650 but with some limitations which I found in the FAQ. I feel that these limitations might be my problem but if you can look at the attached Data file maybe you can advise if this is the case. I believe that I might have to get a new motherboard which FULLY supports the Q9650 CPU!!

I will also try your method of resetting the CMOS and will advise if it makes any difference.

Thanks for your efforts

Yes, try that Clear CMOS method. Very often that is all that is needed. Let's wait to see if that does it before moving on.

Problem fixed by new motherboard

Hello TVeblen,

Unfortunately the Clear CMOS method didn't make any difference to the BSOD's.

After reading that my motherboard didn't fully support the CPU I decided to bite the bullet and buy a new motherboard that did support the CPU and all its functionality. After installing it and getting all the new drivers for it away it went with no BSOD.

Five days of testing and adjusting was fixed at a cost of $99.

Thanks to all of you your inputs.

I hope that I don't have anymore troubles but if I do the first website I will go to will be this one.

Regards

And that is good for us to know. Thanks for the info.

And now the question that I'm sure you've been asking: Why would any company list a CPU as compatible with limitations? That is incompatible in my book!
