Receiving consistent BSODs.

The pattern:
BSOD (seems to happen while Steam is downloading, though I can't confirm)
Turn PC Off (hold power button)
Turn PC back on
Monitor doesn't appear to receive anything from PC (ie nothing comes up on screen)
Turn PC back off (hold power button)
Turn PC back on (Still nothing)

BUT - if I flip the power switch on the power supply, disconnect and reconnect the power cord, the PC will boot back up ok. (At least it has so far - twice).

Many thanks to all the good folks who provide these services!

Take care,
J

Welcome aboard.
I guess it is an old system? Is it branded or a custom build? Most probably you have installed windows during April 2011 for the last time? Let us see in depth.

Two instances of antivirus programs running:

  • Ad-Aware Antivirus
  • Microsoft Security Essentials.
Uninstall Ad-Aware. Keep MSE only. Two Antivirus programs always conflict, and cause stability issues.

Sunbelt Firewall Software
It has ended it's life. Free Firewall Software
Most of the problems are caused by this single thing. Uninstall it at once. Use Windows Firewall, that is inbuilt.

A lot of issues caused by Sunbelt, I must to say.

Let us check the date of the faulting driver.

Very old. See if any updates are possible in ATHEROS drivers for Microsoft Windows (Atheros?????)

Free up the startup.

  1. Click on the Start button
  2. Type “msconfig (without quotes), click the resulting link. It will open the System Configuration window.
  3. Select the “Startup” tab.
  4. Deselect all items other than the antivirus.
  5. Apply > OK
  6. Accept the restart.
Disable USB Selective Suspense.
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/147369-usb-selective-suspend-turn-off.html

The BIOS is old, too.
Code:
BiosVendor = Phoenix Technologies, LTD
BiosVersion = ASUS M3N78 PRO ACPI BIOS Revision 0403
[COLOR=Red]BiosReleaseDate = 08/26/2008[/COLOR]
SystemManufacturer = System manufacturer
SystemProductName = System Product Name
SystemFamily =
SystemVersion = System Version
SystemSKU =
BaseBoardManufacturer = ASUSTeK Computer INC.
BaseBoardProduct = M3N78 PRO
BaseBoardVersion = 1.XX
Try for possible updates.
================================================
Apart from all those bugcheck analysis, my best suggestion for you is to go for the BIOS update, and then do a http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/219487-clean-reinstall-factory-oem-windows-7-a.html.

Thank you Arc!

1) I uninstalled Ad-Aware

2) It does not appear Sunbelt Firewall is on my computer. It isn't an option to uninstall in my list of programs... Ideas?

3) I wasn't sure how to tell what file to get at the Atherton website. Can you provide any assistance how I determine this? I did go to the SMC website and downloaded the latest driver for the SMCWUSB-G 802.11g Wireless USB 2.0 Adapter. When I tried to install it said it was already up to date.

4) I freed up all of the start-up programs per your suggestion.

5) I disabled USB Selective Suspense.

6) I have downloaded the latest BIOS though have not yet installed yet. I'm going to see if I get another blue screen as I'm a little scared to mess with BIOS as I know it can mess everything up if it doesn't work properly.

Curious, this is a custom built machine that's a couple years old. Some of the parts may be wearing out. Do you think that could be a contributing factor?

Many thanks,
J

jcw7, apparently it is not a hardware issue, as it is seen.

If you dont have subnet firewall, delete SBFWIM.sys manually. Search it either in C:\Windows\System32\Drivers or C:\Windows\SysWoW64\Drivers.

For the wireless LAN USB driver, try to uninstall it in device manager, and reinstall the downloaded one.
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/97061-driver-install-device-manager.html

And, as you planned, wait and see, update the BIOS as the last resort.

Let us know the results.

Thank you Arc!

1) I searched for the firewall file manually in both folders (also used the search function) but no luck. Any ideas?

2) I uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers for the wireless USB.

I should add that I don't believe there were any significant changes before these blue screens started happening. I downloaded the game Amnesia via Steam, and didn't seem to have any problem with that. But downloading Batman Arkham City seems to be consistently causing the blue screen. Don't believe I've blue screened when Steam is not downloading that game... (although I downloaded the demo fine).

Thanks again for your help, Arc.

I'll try once more, and post an updated diag log if it blue screens again.
J

jcw7, I just can say that the firewall thing is present in your system, as the memory dumps are recording it. I have given my ideas to you. Nothing more I can do here, from a remote location.

And, one important part of the troubleshooting step is still pending, you may take care of that.

Hey Arc - Thanks for all your help. Not sure why but the problem only seemed to occur when downloading Arkham City in Steam. Eventually it downloaded ok and I haven't had the problem since (knock on wood). Many, many thanks for your time and assistance with this!! I REALLY appreciate it!!

Take care,
J
