BSOD problem

I have been getting a black screen of death on this computer seemingly at random. Most often it's occurred while playing World of Warcraft, but has also happened a couple of times while just browsing in Firefox. It has never happened while the computer is just sitting idle with no applications running.

The computer freezes up, the screen goes black (usually - sometimes another colour) and must be rebooted by the power button. Sometimes the fans spin up to max speed when this happens until rebooting, other times not.

I've swapped out almost all hardware with the exception of the CPU and MoBo. I have tried switching RAM, video card, monitor and PSU. I've tried different seatings for the RAM and video card, disabled the onboard sound and networking, checked for dust or any loose cables. I've updated all drivers and even the BIOS. I've done a registry clean. I've run hwmonitor to check temperatures too but nothing seems out of the ordinary.

A couple of times upon reboot I've gotten the 0x00000117 error (display adapter did not respond in a timely manner) but most of the time there's nothing. I read Jonathan King's tutorial on using the Driver Verifier so I did that and got a blue screen of death, with an 0x000000C9 error.

I have even switched out the main hard drive with one from another computer and the problem persisted. That seems to indicate to me that it's nothing to do with Windows or anything else software-related, but I'm at the point where I've swapped out basically all the hardware except the CPU and MoBo and have no idea what to try now.

Anyway, I've attached the minidump. Any help would be much appreciated.

I forgot to mention:

The computer is just over a year old, I bought all the parts and built it myself. The only thing that has been replaced is the RAM, about a month ago one stick died so I sent both back and got them replaced.

When I ran Driver Verifier I got the 0x000000C9 when Windows was still booting up. Restarted and got it again, but on the third time I got into Windows successfully, so at that point I disabled Driver Verifier and uploaded the dump files.

Really desparate for some help here, I've tried everything I can think of :(

So how did you get that information (the bugcheck and the offending files) from the data I uploaded? I had look through the files before uploading them but couldn't see anything useful -- do I just not know what I'm looking for, or do you need to run those files through some sort of program? Having that sort of divining at my disposal previously could have saved me about 30 hours of testing every little thing I could think of before coming here for help.


Anyway -- I updated both Realtek drivers. The Logitech website didn't have a driver to match the model of my webcam, I guess it's too old or something. I just uninstalled the current drivers and unplugged the webcam for now. Then I turned Driver Verifier back on and it's not blue screening anymore.

After about 4 hours using the computer (playing World of Warcraft while watching a dvd) it black screened again. :( No minidump so I don't know what else to say. Verifier is still running and I'll leave it going overnight but it hasn't picked up anything else.

I'll try to update the antivirus - I need to find my serial number which I probably won't be able to do until Monday. Is there anything else I can try in the meantime?

Turn Verifier off and monitor your computer for anymore BSOD.

Yeah, the webcam is Logitech. It's a Logitech Communicate STX, when I select that product it takes me to a driver for Logitech Communicate STX Plus (a newer model than I have). So I downloaded that driver anyway, but when I tried to install it, it said it wasn't the right match for my hardware. So I just uninstalled the device and drivers completely.

I've turned Verifier off now, it ran fine all night once the webcam was out of the picture.

I'm still getting the random black screen lockups though... I can't find any serial number for the antivirus, it was an educational version so it's likely I don't have one. If that's the case, updating it is not an option but I can remove it entirely and see if the black screens still happen. I'll give that a try today.

There's no dump files from the black screen lockup, so I don't know what else I can do. Any suggestions?

Have you used registry repair software? How did you switch out the hard disk. Must have been a lot of work reinstalling.

I said this already in the first post but I'll explain it in more detail: we have two computers in the house that were built at the same time with the exact same hardware, OS, software, everything. When this one started having BlackSOD problems I tried switching the main hard drive (the one Windows runs on) from this computer with the Windows drive from the other computer. The BlackSOD didn't move with the hard drive, it stayed with the original tower - I'm no expert, but doesn't that indicate that it's definitely a hardware issue?

If it were anything to do with Windows, drivers, corrupt files, programs installed or anything else like that it wouldn't continue to happen with a different hard drive. If I'm wrong please correct me, but that's my understanding - yet everywhere I go for help people keep just suggesting to try drivers and other software/Windows related things when as far as I can see it's a hardware issue.

That said, I've swapped most of the hardware so far (another benefit of having two identical PCs set up) including the RAM, the video card, the PSU, the hard drive, the monitors... by process of elmination I think I'm down to either the CPU or the motherboard. What I'm looking for here is some way to confirm that this is the case, and if so hopefully some way to differentiate which one is the problem so I can replace it. I don't really want to buy one (or both) and then find they're not the problem.

I don't mean to sound ungrateful, I appreciate all the help everyone is giving. But I'm getting very frustrated by the whole thing :(

Or its a hardware/ software combination problem- maybe the CPU running your considerable complex setup can't cope for some reason- if you need all of it for the computer to useful then you can only junk your mobo (CPU is mounted on mobo?). If you can try it with a bit less maybe it will be fine. At least you can read your computer and kind of control it- mine is in Japanese and my Japanese wife shows the danger of a little knowledge and doesn't like changes.

As suggested, Windows 7 doesn't need a "registry program" or a "TuneUp Utility". Within seconds using a registry cleaner or TuneUp Utility, your computer will get corrupted files and unwanted programs/pop-ups, ads/etc...

Go to Event Viewer and look for the error codes about the black screen lock up.
It is best to copy all of the codes and info and post on your next reply.
