I'm trying to help my father out with his laptop.

Every few months it will go through a series of 'bad days' where it BSOD's quite a bit. He can't get his email or do any work. Usually it clears up of its own volition in a few days and it works fine for a couple months or so. Then the BSOD's happen again. He really only uses laptop for email, web browsing, no gaming, nothing CPU taxing or anything crazy... I wanted to see if I could solve his problem once and for all. Thank you for your help.

Hi mate, ask your father to uninstall Norton and all Symentec products using Norton Removal tool. Use Microsoft Security Essentials as your antivirus with windows inbuilt firewall, and free MBAM as the on demand scanner.

Norton is notably failing here, and causing the BSODs.

Also ask him to free up the startup. Windows does not need any other program to auto start with it, but the auto start programs often conflicts and causes various problems including BSODs.

  1. Click on the Start button
  2. Type “msconfig (without quotes), click the resulting link. It will open the System Configuration window.
  3. Select the “Startup” tab.
  4. Deselect all items other than the antivirus, and the touchpad driver, SynTPEnh.
  5. Apply > OK
  6. Accept then restart.
Let us know for any further issue.

Arc,

Thanks for your help again. I went ahead and got rid of Norton and changed the start up, but am still having problems. This laptop is really acting up. It's crashing in safe mode left and right. It won't even let me run the diagnostic tool. It gets to the event log portion and then crashes. I attached the partial .zip file that has the dmps in it, maybe you can figure it out from those alone? Thanks a ton Arc!

Arc,

OK, I was finally able to get the SF Diagnostic tool to get a full scan without a BSOD interrupting. Here's the complete .zip. Thanks!

And as it is BSODing in safe mode too, it is supposed to be a hardware issue.

Test your RAM modules for possible errors.
How to Test and Diagnose RAM Issues with Memtest86+
Run memtest for at least 8 passes, preferably overnight.

If it start showing errors/red lines, stop testing. A single error is enough to determine that something is going bad there.

Stress test the Graphics Card using Furmark.
Video Card - Stress Test with Furmark

Stress test the CPU.
Hardware - Stress Test With Prime95

See what happens.
