My son is away at college and he e-mailed that his 6 month old latop (i.e. purchased new in Aug 2012) periodically (40% - 50%) BSOD on a cold boot. When the system reboots, windows loads fine. He has not installed any software or had any other issues until this past week. If he does a hot reboot, the laptop has not BSOD so far. I had him run a check on the memory and it tests fine. A chkdsk yielded nothing either.

I have read about how to get the dump file attached to my question and this make take several days for me to walk him through this process...but I thought that I would give the information that I currently have related to his BSOD. The BSOD is an IRQL_not_less_or_equal with the following stop code:
0X000000A (0x0000000000000000, 0x0000000000000002, 0x0000000000000000, 0xFFFFF800030D4CD4)--he sent this information to me via e-mail as a picture he took on his droid phone of the BSOD screen.

This morning he captured this additional information when he encourntered yet another cold boot BSOD via a screen capture:

My son was able to locate someone in the tech support area at the University and was able to e-mail me the .dmp file...its now attached.

I am sorry...I have just learned from reading further that I did not name the zip file as my user name jimmyc....sorry about that.

Also, the tech support at the University had him try a system repair....but he still has the BSOD about 50% of the time on a cold boot. JimC

Toshiba Specifications

Specifications are: Win7 Home Premium 64bit; i-3 processor, 4GB memory, 500GB hard drive.

I called my son and he ran sfc-scannow....no exceptions reported---still BSOD about 40% - 50% of the time...The BSOD's come whether the laptop has been turned off all night or if you cold boot immedately after shutting down. I thought maybe it was heat related thinking that a cold boot after it had been on a while might be the pattern---but my son said he gets the BSOD screen about every other morning when he cold boots it at the start of his class day.

Any other suggestions?

Try having him run memtest86+ have him run it for at least 8 passes tel him to do it over night it can take a long time for memtest to run. Here is a link to the tutorial:

Out of curiosity Jim run this and lets us know the temps in the machine

http://www.piriform.com/speccy/download
But it will be interesting to see what the memtest comes up with as dsPrague said to do and as an afterthought maybe it might be an idea to just reseat the RAM sticks if you are not sure how to do that go to this site find the model and it will show you. http://www.irisvista.com/ < then go to disassembly guides for specifics if you have to.

I use this site all the time for Toshy fixes:)

I had him run the memory testing software all night...18 passes and no errors. I had him, just for validation again, run the sfc /scannow again--and again the same result, windows resource protection did not find any integrity violations. I ran the Speccy temp and its ok. He found that the PC had Toshiba diagnostic software...he ran that--and every thing is fine (i.e. PC temperature, hard drive, battery charging, etc.). Ran Chkdsk for the third time too...and again, no problems.

I called Best Buy Geek squad since I purchased the laptop their last August and they need to "see" several BSOD's not just one prior to warranty service. My son cold boots the PC 5-6 times a day (i.e. between classes, lunch, etc.) and averages 2 BSOD's a day. Even if I have it serviced, I would need to buy a new PC as my son needs the laptop every day for college....seems I am really in a tight spot.

I have still not been able to confirm, to my satisfcation, that his special Toshiba, Best Buy only made PC, model # L775-S7114 is the same as the L775_S7111. The latter is listed on Toshiba's website while my son's Toshiba model is not. There is a Bios update for the L775-S7111---I am afraid to let my son try the Bios update as sometimes Bios updates fail, etc--plus I am not absolutely certain that the Bios update will work on his PC.

I guess the only thing I can not check is the motherboard....any other ideas?

Well if it were me Jim I would get the seller to do something under warranty mate as Toshiba will drop you like a red hot potato once it runs out.

In my experience of fixing Toshiba's and after having two myself I found the only cure (for mine) was to install a SSD more RAM and an OEM 7 OS and back data up if necessary to an external.

The BIOS mate I wouldn't touch and the bloatware that Toshiba puts on the machines is just a load of hog wash - looks impressive but is crap so I wouldn't go much on relying on their utilities.

To be honest they used to be a top brand but since they are now outsourced so to speak they have become an ordinary product. The models you speak of yes they are made for different sellers and the one I am on right now is actually made to American model specs as I found out when trying to fix it and get bits for it:mad:. Have one again - not me that for sure!

I suppose that is what I will need to do...I just hate the thought that I need to already buy another new laptop and he hasn't even completed his freshman year at college. Plus, I'll need to down grade the new laptop to Win7 as Win8 is currently not supported by his University..Win8 will be supported next August when class resume for the fall semester. What do you think is the current top brand?

I may just purchase some new memory as its not that expensive and send it to him to try even though it tested good....Perhaps its wishful thinking, but I would dearly love to get the laptop through the next 10 weeks of his spring semester...then I could let Best Buy tech support have it prior to expiration of the warranty. That seems like a dream at this point. I am truly an uphappy camper about this problem.

Thank you for all of your advice....JimC

No probs Jim for brands mate I ma quite impressed with the HP or an Asus and the third gen Intel cores in them and for my money the i5 is the core to beat unless you really want the i7. Plus as much RAM as possible 4GB being minimum and 8GB being ideal (I have that much in this machine).

Now Sony, Samsung, and Dell do good machines though they do tend to be a tad more expensive.

Really does depend on the budget and what the machine is going to be used for and knowing young folks that will include some ?gaming? LOL!!

As for the OS I think you would have to ask someone who has sued 8 for some time as one hears that some like it some cannot wait to get back to 7. Me - I like 7 but then again I am just an old codger and just not overly enthused with those sorts of applications as they are presented in 8. I am just not a fan of any of the tablets and stuff that the younger folks like so probably why I feel the way I do about 8:)
