BSOD when computer is idle?

Hi guys,

Never done this before, so ill try to explain what i can.

I have just built my new PC just over a week ago. All seemed fine until i resumed my normal routine and started watching videos online, if i watch a video on youtube or a livestream on twtich tv after some time i get bsod. Whats worth noting is that this only happens when i dont use computer at all and just watching videos, meaning i can be in bed watching a video and not using the pc and i will get bsod after some time. However if i watch videos and at the same time use the pc, for example playing games or browsing the web i dont get bsod what so ever.

Update: A new BSOD happened when i wasnt at the computer and no programs were running.

This is very unusual, i have tried researching, updating drivers, bios and various other things, but nothing really helped.

Due to limited time i have available to figure this problem out i have been unable to run more serious tests.

I hope someone can read through my dump files and perhaps pinpoint the issue i am having.

Thanks in advance!

Welcome to 7F.

Your logs are all 0x124 which means your PC is showing signs of hardware errors, but as with a large amount of 0x124 STOPs the dumps are giving no clues as to what the problem is. Follow the trouble shooting steps below.

:warn: If you're overclocking your system, revert back to stock clocks now. :warn:

:ar: Run Prime95 to stress test your CPU. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/100352-hardware-stress-test-prime95.html

   Warning
Your CPU temperatures will rise quickly while under this stress test. Keep a keen eye on them.

:ar: Run MemTest86+ to analyse your RAM. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/105647-ram-test-memtest86.html

   Note
MemTest86+ needs to be run for at least 8 passes for conclusive results. Set it running before you go to bed and leave it overnight. We're looking for zero errors here. Even a single error will indicate RAM failure.

:ar: Run SeaTools to check the integrity of your HDD. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/313457-seatools-dos-windows-how-use.html

:ar: Run Furmark to stress test your GPU. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/100356-video-card-stress-test-furmark.html

   Note
Run Furmark for around 30 minutes.

   Warning
Your GPU temperatures will rise quickly while Furmark is running. Keep a keen eye on them.

No, that will be a standard setting for an aftermarket card.

Your latest BSOD is another STOP 0x124, you definitely have a hardware issue. You'll need to perform the steps detailed above to start to narrow down what the problem actually is. Firstly though can you check your temperatures of your CPU and GPU and report those in your next post.

I use Core Temp to monitor CPU and a GPU Meter widged to monitor graphics card temperature. So far the highest i've seen the CPU you go up to is around 48C and GPU around 68C while playing a game. When idle, CPU is around 30C and GPU around 22C.

In regards to doing those tests above, could you please give me an approximate time i should run each test for?

Edit, just had another bsod when i was away from the PC and nothing was running on it. This type of crash started last night, before it only happened when i was watching videos as stated in my initial post. This makes me think how will i run those tests, in particular during the night as my PC might bsod during the test and then that time will be wasted essentially.

Ran the Furmark GPU test for just over 30 minutes, everything seemed fine. Max GPU temp during test was 81C. CPU temp went up to 70C during the test at one point but average is lower.

Will do other tests and post updates asap.

So, i just tried running Prime95 test for the CPU with Small FFT option and the CPU temperature went to 100C pretty much instantly, i am pretty sure that is not right so i wont be doing this test right now, some feedback on this would be appreciated.

Considering this should i still run the RAM test over night?

Right, you'll be good to run MemTest86+ overnight. It needs to run for at least 8 passes for conclusive results, even one error will indicate failing RAM.

I'm more concerned about your CPU with the temperature it hit with Prime95, especially that quickly. Have you ever applied new thermal paste to your CPU cooler?

The PC is brand new (less than 2 weeks), the thermal paste has been applied and spread around as everything was being put together. It is very unusual because at idle CPU temp is around 30C and even during gaming i dont usually see it go above 50C. So im very confused why it jumped to 100C during the test.

I hope my PC doesnt bsod while i run RAM test during the night.

Update: Had 1 bsod tonight and of course it happened when i wasnt using the PC apart from watching a live stream, there is definitely some kind of pattern here. Anyway, attaching latest files.

Prime95 will put more load on your CPU than most programs, that's what it's designed for. When you say you don't usually see it go over 50°C does that mean it has done? What type of CPU cooler are using? How much thermal paste did you apply? Too much can be just as bad as not enough.
A lot of questions sorry but it needs investigating thoroughly.

Run MemTest86+ overnight and we'll see what the results say. If your machine does BSOD during the test it's just going to take some perseverance unfortunately. I've a feeling your RAM will pass the test but we need to be 100% sure.

Gigabyte SIV (System Information Viewer), uninstall it. It contains thermald.exe (see dump readout in post #7 which I've edited to highlight that file) and has been attributed to causing BSODs in previous cases, 0x124s to be exact. Test your system without that software installed.

I'd also recommend uninstalling Cloud Station and APP Center.

Can you upload all files directly to the forum in future too please mate instead of image hosting sites?

I have uninstalled it now, but wont really be able to test until tomorrow as i am about to go sleep.

Sorry about the image, i am not very familiar with this forum options.

I will run the RAM test during the night and will report back as soon as i can tomorrow. Thanks for your help so far Boozad, i appreciate it.

Just one question for the night, i was thinking about doing a clean install of windows, as i thought maybe i messed up somewhere settings things up and also i thought i wouldn't use the gigabyte CD this time around. Do you think its worth it or not yet?

Not just yet, if all of that unneeded Gigabyte bloatware can be removed I think you'll be good. Let's see how it goes with the crapware uninstalled and we'll take it from there.

There's a tutorial here that shows you how to upload images and files, it's easy once you've done it once and just makes life on here a lot easier. ;) http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/9733-screenshots-files-upload-post-seven-forums.html

Get to testing that system as soon as you can with the Gigabyte crapware gone and let us know how you get on mate. I think you'll find your RAM is perfectly fine.
