Blue screens seem to occur when there is some type of video running, like YouTube or my Slingbox. Cannot be sure about that, tho'.

Had some problems w/ Vista 64 Ultimate also, but not as frequent as w/ Win 7.

Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool shows hardware errors, but does not tell what they are.

Memtest86 (not 86+) showed no memory errors. Downloaded but have not yet run 86+.

Windows Action Center produces messages indicating a USB problem.

Anything else you want to know about my system, please ask. If there is a way to display more info to upload here, please advise.

Thanks!

Very diplomatic post. My apologies for not checking back in the first post before requesting the info again.

No firm evidence for my suspicion that your Norton product is causing this problem. But the number of differing error codes suggests (to me) either a low-level utility/driver or a hardware fault - and Norton seems to fit the bill (and has a history of issues similar to this).

So, while waiting for the dump files to finish running, I'd suggest the following:
- download a free antivirus for testing purposes: Free AntiVirus
- uninstall the Norton from your system
- remove any remnants of Norton using this free tool: Download and run the Norton Removal Tool
- IMMEDIATELY install and update the free antivirus
- check to see if this fixes the BSOD's

I suspect that there's also another issue with your Brother USB devices (and possibly your networking drivers due to the symptoms that you're related). Please update these older drivers that were present during the crashes:
Code:
BrSerId.sys Sun Aug 06 21:51:11 2006 - Brother Serial Driver
BrUsbSer.sys Wed Aug 09 08:11:02 2006 - Brother USB Serial Driver
mdmxsdk.sys Mon Jun 19 17:27:26 2006
nvm62x64.sys Fri Oct 17 17:01:06 2008 - nVidia Networking Driver
pcouffin.sys Tue Dec 05 09:39:30 2006
Please let us know if these things were successful in fixing your issues.

You're helping me out, bro'. Not gonna get any smart-alex stuff from me! :geek:

As I said in reply to another post, memtest86+ shows no errors.

Will update the drivers as suggested and remove Norton.

You recommended a free virus scanner. I assume I should use Windows firewall also.

Will make those changes and try to duplicate what I did when the BSOD happened.

Do you happen to have any suggestions for an all-in-once suite to replace Norton 360?

Windows update offers 3 optional updates, which I will also install:

nVidia - Display - NVIDIA GeForce 6150SE nForce 430
nVidia - Network - NVIDIA nForce Networking Controller
NVIDIA Corporation - Storage - NVIDIA nForce Serial ATA Controller

I had installed these previously but rolled them back because I thought they might be related to the BSOD's.

I searched Brother site and found:

Windows® 7 Information:
The Windows Update system provided by Microsoft® provides the appropriate drivers for your Brother machine. These drivers have the basic functionality of Brother original drivers.

Update has not asked me to install newer drivers.

FWIW, there are folks who get a mite bit irritated when I make a mistake. In those cases all I can do is offer them their money back! :) Seriously tho', I do sincerely appreciate the consideration.

For normal use Windows Update is OK - but when experiencing problems, it's not a good idea to use Windows Update for driver updates. I prefer that the drivers come from the website of the manufacturer of the device/program.

In this case, download these drivers: NVIDIA DRIVERS 15.49 WHQL
They contain:
Windows Vista/Win7 64-bit Driver Versions:
  • Ethernet Driver (v73.14+) WHQL
  • Network Management Tools (v73.16) "Sedona"
  • SATAIDE Driver (v11.1.0.33) WHQL
  • SATARAID Driver (v11.1.0.33) WHQL
  • RAIDTOOL Application (v11.1.0.30)
  • SMBUS Driver (v4.74) WHQL
  • SMU Driver (v1.71) WHQL
  • GPU Driver (v190.38) WHQL
  • Physx (v9.09.0428)
  • Away Mode Driver (v6.0.6000.114) WHQL
  • Installer (v7.57)
Then install them using this procedure (probably not necessary, but do it just to be sure):
Compatibilty Mode Driver Installation:
1 - Download the latest driver from the manufacturer's website.
2 - Uninstall the current drivers using the Control Panel...Programs and features...Uninstall a program applet. Then verify that the driver/device has been removed in Device Manager
3 - Right click on freshly downloaded driver installation file and select "Properties"
4 - Select the Compatibility tab - and do the following:
- Click on the "Change settings for all users" button
- Click on the box to select "Run this program in compatibility mode for" and then select Windows Vista Service Pack 1
- Click on the box to select "Run as administrator"
- Click on OK to exit all the dialogs
5 - Right click on the driver installation file and select "Run as administrator"
6 - Let it install and see if that stops the BSOD's.
I do not recommend any All-In-One suite to replace Norton. We've seen issues with any of the Security Center/Internet Security applications - so they aren't recommended because of this. The reason that they aren't recommended is because they'll fail on you and leave no traces of the failure - so you'll spend weeks troubleshooting it.

In my case (at work), it took me 4 hours of digging around in the depths of the OS to find a hung process from Norton - and that was because I'd already done the digging around and hadn't found anything (I'm paid by the hour, so it was fun work for me!).

If you want a more flexible firewall, I'd suggest the free Sphinx Firewall Control for the Windows Firewall: Windows 7 Firewall Control : Sphinx Software

As for the Brother stuff - it's your option to remove it or leave it be.

The reason for updating the older drivers is that the older drivers are more likely to have compatibility issues with the newer OS's. But that doesn't mean that they're going to have problems - just that they're more likely.

Still don't trust Windows Update. I had a video card update go south on me from Windows Update. So I went to the computer manufacturer's website for the update and had the same issue (BSOD). Finally I went to the nVidia site and got their driver - and all was well.

Good luck!
