BSODs driving me batty!

Hi! I did a search on the forum and didn't see any solutions to this, so I'll run it by you all.

I just got a new computer pre-installed with Vista, which I brought home and immediately installed Win 7 RC. Everything is running fine except I get at least one BSOD a day, and I can't even narrow it down to what I'm doing, because it happens even when I'm idle.

Computer is an HP Pavilion, 64-bit AMD Phenom X3 8550 Triple-Core, 4GB memory. It didn't come with a wireless card so I'm using a Linksys Wireless G USB adapter.

Is there anything about this configuration that is problematic with 7?

I tried to access my Windows\Minidump files but it's locked and I apparently don't have permission, although I'm an administrator, so not sure what's up with that. Here's some info I gleaned from the Windows recovery screen that comes up after I boot;

If I try to access that WER-37502-0.sysdata.xml file it just opens in IE and tells me I suck.

Anyone have any ideas? I'm otherwise liking 7 and want to love it, but these BSODs are making that difficult...

Hi e46Girl. There are people here that can read minidumps and hopefully they will be able to help you. In addition to what you've posted, have you checked the windows logs in the event viewer? That may be helpful too.

Hi e46Girl, if you can't access the minidump folder you need to change the security settings so that you have access to it:

Right click on the minidump folder, select properties, select the security tab, click edit and then add, enter your username and click ok. Select your username and then set the required permissions and then click ok twice. You should now be able to access the minidump folder to upload the files.

What programes do you have installed? I know that after installing Comodo antivirus on W7 it caused me to get a BSOD everytime I logged on but Comodo firewall works fine. It may be a programe issue.

Well, I have been running Windows 7 for 6 months on from 3 to 6 different computers with different hardware and software on all of them, and almost all of the BSOD'd that have happened have always traced back to "VISTA_DRIVER_FAULT", this is the main note in debugging, known as the "DEFAULT_BUCKET_ID", the biggest issue is Windows compatibility problems with existing hardware designed and age.
Nobody uses computers like everyone else, Everybody used computers for their own desires and wishes. Microsoft will have to continue the work on Windows 7 just like they have on every other Operating System they have designed.
If any one remembers the beginning of of Windows XP, which began in 1998 and was not released (beta test) in late 2001, and finally released to the public in 2002, but it had issues (just like Win 7) until the release of SP1, which was not perfect either.

The best way you can find out what the problem is with your system is to post a list of your System's Hardware, and the Applications that your using, Primaraly with your security software, AV-Firewall-Malware or any other programs you use that may be the cause, and attach the %systemdrive%\Windows\Minidump\ *****.dmp file (the latest one), which I recommend you archive it first (zip or rar or 7zip).
Then a lot of people (bug hackers) can check the dump file and find a trace back to the initial cause and track it to the BSOD cause, then post and/or send the info to MS for Feedback info.

I personally think that the Feedback Link (on the desktop) should not have been removed, cause you could send the files and any notes where you suspect is the bug, to Microsoft, and eventually they will find the issue and either make the Kernel more compatible or get the Driver developers to modify the issue for compatibility and maintain the security level.

Please zip up the contents of the C:\Windows\Minidump directory and upload it with your next post. We'll have a look at the memory dump files and will see what we can figure out.

While you're waiting, I'd suggest uninstalling your video driver. Then download the latest version available from the manufacturer of your video chipset (ATI, nVidia, Intel, etc) and install that.

Here's a brief description of the error message from the Debugging Tools Help file. As you can see, it's a problem with the video driver - so that's the most probable thing to try:

Bug Check 0x116: VIDEO_TDR_ERROR

The VIDEO_TDR_ ERROR bug check has a value of 0x00000116. This indicates that an attempt to reset the display driver and recover from a timeout failed.

Thanks for the replies! I think I may have it narrowed down to the Linksys wireless USB adapter. My mobo can only accommodate a PCI-E card and I couldn't find one, so I just picked up this USB one, and I had a helluva time getting the drivers installed. Took some manipulation but finally got it going, and had been BSOD'ing ever since. Yesterday I removed the USB adapter and hard-wired it to the router, and all my problems went away (so far). This isn't ideal, because I've now got an ugly cable running across my livingroom, but until I can find a PCI-E card, it's workable.

I'm an administrator, and my username has 'full control' in the security section, but it's still locked, and trying to open a dump file tells me Access Denied. Very strange. I'd still like to figure it out in case my problem isn't solved and I need to refer to it.

LOL, sorry.. no. IE tells me the page can't be displayed, or I typed the URL in wrong or something (which I didn't). In my world, that equates to 'you suck'

I've only had the PC about a week so I haven't had time to contaminate it too much, but so far I've got;

Dreamweaver
Firefox / Thunderbird
WS_FTP Pro
And some proprietary interface for my on-board nVidia card

I can do that, but I can't unlock it. I actually tried copying the whole folder to my desktop, and then I was able to open one of the dump files, but it looked all encrypted. I'm not sure if that's what you need....

Funny you mention that. When I first got 7 installed, the video wan't right, and I couldn't get the right resolution. I don't think the drivers were even installed. I went to nVidia and my vid card wasn't listed (I think it's one made exclusively for HP as it's on-board). I had the option to let it detect the best drivers for me, and it found one for me one to download. I did that, and my display became perfect. I didn't give it anymore thought. If it turns out the wireless adapter wasn't the culprit, I'll troubleshoot the vid driver for sure.

I did change the behavior of my bluescreen options to not re-boot right away, so if it does happen again I can at least catch what's on the screen before it reboots.

Following the process I stated earlier, you should have access to the contents of the minidump folder, however, you probably haven't got permissions to the minidump files. If you right click on one of them and select properties then security you will see what I mean.

If you can copy the minidump folder to the desktop then do that. Zip up all the files within that folder and then upload them in your next post. Once we've seen the files, we may have a better idea of what is causing this.

But, the answer to the problem isn't always obvious in the memory dump - so it takes some experience to know what's normal and what isn't. So I'd still ask that you zip up and upload the files in your next post.

To zip them, select them all by holding down Ctrl while clicking on each one. Then right click on them and select "Send to", then select "Compressed (zipped) folder"
That'll give you a folder in that location that ends in .zip. That's what you should upload for us to have a look at.

BCCode 116 (or 0x00000116) is usually video driver related. You may need to reinstall or update yours with a fresh set from the manufacturer.
I simply find the video card. DELETE the install, reboot and let Win 7 install the driver.
