Build 7600 activation?

The grace period is supposed to be used by people who already have a license and need the time to subscribe to an Internet connection or handle other logistics. Using Windows 7 RTM without a key, even during the grace period is technically illegal (though, admittedly, nobody is going to go after you for that). Also, many people seem to misunderstand the rearm and misstate that it's "legal". No, it's not. The rearm is intended for OEMs to reset to a clean slate for the purpose of preinstalls and imaging. Use by the end user is not "legal" in the technical sense (this is on top of the "illegal" use of the grace period).

It's true that MSFT probably doesn't care and they certainly are not going to go after people for this, but that doesn't make it legal. Call it "something you can almost certainly get away with" if you want, but don't call it "legal".

It's legal, it's legal, it's legal :roflmao:

I agree. It is legal. And all it is doing is extending the eavluation period (where you may or may not buy the software). Here is a similar doc explained by MS for server 2008, although the grace period for client OS is 30 days, rather than 60.

How to extend the Windows Server 2008 evaluation period

Its illegal..then its legal...then its illegal again...hmm

So do you plan on using your 7600 x64 more than 30 days? just wondering..I for one have no problem, rearming. If there were a problem with it, it wouldnt have been in about all versions of windows, and Im sure it would not have a reason to stay "Genuine" if not. Cracking will ruin an install..but a LEGIT method will not. My morals are good, and I love my family..and my friends..so take my morals to the bank..:D TY

The re-arm feature was made by Microsoft and put into their software...it is there to extend the trial period for times when activation is not necessary or desirable (like when a trial product has no activation servers for it yet...)...how is it in-moral to use the re-arm feature????If it was than Microsoft themselves would not even have it...

I agree. Its like the best infomercial product...

"Try now for 120 days, if you don't like it just throw it away" except for the fact that you probably accumulated a lot of docs/pics/videos/apps/etc by then and now you are at a point where you should probably buy it. And the average home user will think they will lose everything the have on there if they don't buy and activate it.

I think it was a smart move, not just to let someone have a "free" OS for 120 days, but giving them a test drive. If that person chooses to use it as their main OS for those 120 days, they are most likely going to buy it. PLUS the average user doesn't know how to rearm. They are gonna try/buy after the 30 days.

That's what a friend of mine did with Windows Home Server. He got the trial, after 30 days of it backing up 5 of his machines, he bought it because he was already "knee deep" in all of of his backups, and everything was running perfect.

My reply was supposed to have been sarcastic!
There is no way of purchasing it before Oct that doesn't involve some sort of activation/re-arming before then.

Hi guys
If you are THAT desperate do as people say either wait another 2 or 3 weeks and BUY a copy or IMO what is a MUCH better idea is to look on the net for Discount PROMO codes (100% legal) and take out an Ms TECHNET subscription where you can legally download LOADS OF FULLY FUNCTIONAL MS software including W7 when its released. You can also get copies on Office 2007 (2010 when available) W8 server etc Windows XP, XP64 etc etc. for the cost (with a promo code) of only a few dollars more than buying a single retail license of W7.

You can also get multiple keys for each product you download (up to 10 per product I believe) so if you've got more than one machine to upgrade IMO its a no brainer.

(BTW I don't work or have any affiliation with MS so I don't collect rewards for people joining -- just looking at simple economics -- it makes sense
imagine just installing a full copy of OFFICE 2007 on 3 machines for example).

Cheers
jimbo

That's the problem, though: it's not an evaluation period. Many people think it is, and many people use it as an evaluation period, and this is one of the greatest and most widespread misunderstandings of Windows licensing. But if you look at licensing, it's not for evaluation. It's a grace period, to make sure you have the logistics to activate, not an evaluation period. And that's why it's illegal. As for moral, I think it's fine to use it as an evaluation period: you're not hurting anyone and MSFT won't go after you. It's moral (IMO) and MSFT makes no effort to enforce it, but it's not legal.

I'm running build 7264 x64, but I will be wiping it in October as my lovely package from Comet will arrive at a cost of only £89.98 for 2 Home Premium Editions! I was one of the lucky ones and ordered these on the first day of Microsoft's offer. I'm certainly not going to bother checking out any more builds now, don't see any point. It's been fun though!
Now looking forward to the future testing of Windows 8.
:geek:

Yep, same here. Got my HP form Amazon for £45 inc free next day delivery. Glad i got in quick.
I've been using all the builds as Ultimate but just re installed 7600 as HP on my sons PC so i can test out if ill miss anything.
Im running 7260 on our main PC and ill stick with that until Oct.

Ok, WTF. Just install and enjoy what you got. Re-arm if necessary or stick with one of the earlier builds that uses the RC key until October or later. Jeez, this doesn't have to be that complicated.
