Bulk Renaming Photos

My wife and I have a massive collection of digital photos, and will surely be adding to that. Currently, I use an old program called rname-it to bulk rename all the photos in a folder, such as Christmas 2009 001.jpg, etc. What do you use to handle this chore? I downloaded one called Bulk Rename Utility, but have yet to try it out.

Natively in Windows 7, you can highlight all of the files you want renamed, press F2, rename the first one, and it will rename all of the highlighted files with the new name plus an appended (x) where x is the current number in the sequence.

However, I am not sure if it can do renaming where you highlight all of them and rename them all in a series of 001.jpg, 002.jpg, ... etc.

Personally, for my dSLR, I use the bundled Canon EOS software that allows you specifically name series' of pictures as they're imported so I don't have to do it retroactively. I would think that might be your best bet - to do that in real time rather than go back and do it, if you can.

I use IrfanView. Great program. The part of it to use for renaming is 'IrfanView Thumbnails'. Very easy to figure out & use.

I actually use cam2PC free to name my photos from the camera at the upload point. can also be used to rename from folders and allows inclusion of exif data in name

I don't use any special app to rename batches.

I just have all photos that will be named something similar, in a the same folder.
Such as "Christmas, 2010" for example


Left Click,drag and highlight all photos, and then Right click & rename the very 1st one.

If you name it Christamas 2010, they will be numbered....
Christmas, 2010 (01), Christmas, 2010 (02), Christmas, 2010 (03), etc...

I don't give photo and special name, I wrote my own little script to take my photo run them though an optimizer then renames using the SHA1 hash of the file. I proceeds to use TAGS in place of file names. But I do organize the photo sets into folders, of course.

I know that the last post in this thread was months ago but I ham having a little trouble with my pictures. I have renamed my photos just the same way you have but have you noticed that when you open the image bigger and scroll through them they are in the wrong order? It probably doesn't matter if yours are all of Christmas but if you need to scroll through them in that particular order when they are enlarged it doesn't work.

Do you know how to rectify this problem?
