C drive properties

When looking at the C drive, all I can account for is about 30gb, yet properties says 84gb used.

Why the discrepancy?

When I look at all the names ( users, programs, etc) they all total up to about 30gb.

No, I haven't.
But are you saying that background programs could account for 50gb?

Have you also included windows files? And have you cleared out your temp folder? I know this isn't gonna take up 50GB, but it could clear out some. Not all the time, everything you see my adding it all up will be exact with what windows is saying.

When you "account" for all of your programs and such. Most of the time it won't be the same as what Windows will say it will be. Yes it could be a glitch in windows, but it could also be that there is more on your computer then you think.

If I look at all files that show on C drive - they only add up to 30gb.
That is why I am confused.
Wouldn't everything on my computer show on C drive - as in the pic?

How are you adding these files up? Are you hovering over the file and waiting for the caption to come up and tell you the size of the folder?

I am right clicking and viewing properties of each file - program files, windows, etc.

Ok, I got it.
I originally hovered over each file and got 30gb.
Now, I right clicked and see that properties is different.

When I right clicked, the properties still only show 50 gb used, so I still don't know where the other 34 gb is.

Well i just did the same exact think you did, and mine shows i have 88.6 GB used, and i added it up to 66.45 used.

This one i cannot explain. Imma do some research on this.

Get something like Treesize free to help out. Another thing to look at is how you have hidden files checked in Explorer>tools>folder options>view.
Don't know if that affects the sizes shown, but it will give you a view of hidden files. If they are turned on, hibernate, paging, and system restore can use a lot of space. Again, I don't know exactly how you are adding up space, but I can tell you that all space can be accounted for, and there should be no mysteries.
We don't like mysteries here.

haha thanks Victor. Normally hibernation will take up about 3 Gigs or so. Atleast it did last time i checked. Hidden files are also something else I forgot about. Like in another post, derek reminded me of hidden files.
