When I got my new Win 7 64 bit desktop I was unable to get a Win 7 installation disk so I immediately created a partition image which I can restore to.

However, my experience has been that at some point I am going to need a bootable installation disk. Can I create one from my existing installation?

Hello Oldtraveler,

What brand is your computer? Most OEM store bought computers will have an option to create a set if OEM Windows 7 Recovery discs that can be used at boot to restore your Windows 7 back to factory defaults.

I can't find anything for Asus, but look in your Start Menu for a "Asus Recovery Manager" type program to run. It should allow you to create a set of recovery discs. One for Windows 7, and one for Applications and Drivers.

You would need to have a ISO file
to burn to a disk soo the pc would recongnize the iso file and run the setup file

Be on the lookout for a Win7 installer. They are all alike with some versions hidden due to the presence of an ei.cfg file in Sources folder, which you can remove then recompile the ISO to burn to DVD: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/32055-bootable-iso-create-installation-files.html

Until your find or borrow an installer to copy, be sure to create a System Repair CD as you will need it to reimage the HD using the Win7 backup image, or for other repairs if Win7 won't start.

As long as you have the windows serial number on the case, I'd just "borrow" an install disc from a friend if you ever need to reinstall.
