Win 7 Pro X64 "Some updates were not installed" Code 80073701

Well,

I have been getting that above error now since roughly December or so. Since then SOME updates have installed others not at all (usually the important security updates). I am here because I have tried everything that I could find on my own to no avail.

This is my main PC, Win 7 64 Pro, 8 core AMD, 32GB.

Just before I noticed the errors installing updates I went from a mechanical Hard Drive to a Samsung SSD via cloning my OS (860 EVO 1 TB). In addition to that and about the same time "I cut the cable" so to say and ditched my ISP: COMCAST... I mention that because I was using their free version of NORTON Utilities which included their Anti-Virus and firewall. Because I cancelled Comcast - they in turn cancelled my Norton subscription. So I went and bought a retail version of Norton Utilities and reinstalled.

Anyhow, I am going to try and share my CBS.zip file via Dropbox (It's 48mb in size?) :confused:View attachment 407743
and a print-screen of the error I have been seeing for months.

I am a little tech savvy (I built the machine I'm running) but I am no genius either so please bear with me and thanks for any help in advance...

CBS Zip here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/10DUoyXhTw40hTAEKI-IJhOpUZCuyw2JW/view?usp=sharing If that doesn't download from google drive I tried Dropbox here: Dropbox - CBS.zip

Error: win up error.PNG

PS
I am considering moving to Win 10 Pro via upgrade but I can't get that to work either. (Getting "We couldn't install Windows 100x8007001F-0x20006 The installation failed in the SAFE_OS phase with an error during REPLICATE_OC operation). I SUSPECT that I can't upgrade because I am unable to get Win 7 updates to work.

Hi joejoered,
Welcome to SevenForums!

Just a thought : Why don't you make a Win 10 Pro clean install using a Win 7 Pro retail key ? Even if you upgrade successfully, you may need to make a clean install thereafter. In place upgrades are not great.

Thanks & Regards. ...

Vineet,
Thanks. I have considered doing a clean install and will do that if necessary and am saving that option as a last chance effort as I use this PC to do a fair amount of photo editing.

I have stand-alone versions of Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop installed and I am worried that once I wipe those from my HDD that I may not be able to reinstall them. I originally purchased previous/older stand-alone versions of both and then installed downloaded updates on top of the original versions. I would rather not pay Adobe's subscription fees for their "cloud" based programs.

And for that reason I am willing to give the upgrade route a try before doing a fresh install.

Snick,
Many thanks in advance!!!

Joe

joejoered, you should invest a couple $ in an external hard drive, minimum USB flash (with USB temporary) and do a full disk backup to whichever you choose either AOMEI free or Macrium Reflect free.

Hi SNICK & joejoered,
Greets.

@ joejoered :

1. You are in the safe hands. I hope it will let me learn new things & tricks.

Extras :

(i) Good to know that you make backups of important files but do you make System Image(s) ? Normal backup of important files can only give you your important files back.
The OS is also very important to you so it will be good to have system image. If you have a system image, you can revert back to present status of OS in just half an hour. It may be very helpful in different conditions.
For eg.
(a) During or after troubleshooting or in future, you land in worse condition.
(b) All goes well, but you find that win 10 is not so good & you want win
7 back.
(c) All goes well with win 10 upgrade, but it does not support the already installed programs which
are very important to you. They can possibly not even work with the Compatibility Assistant
feature in win 10.

(( With Sir SIW 2's WinRE iso, you can make & restore System Images of present OS even without making any installations/changes to the current installation. I emphasize on making at least one system image & verify it beforehand. ))

(ii). There are some programs like PC Trans, PCMover, etc. They can help you to take your installed programs directly to new/clean installations.
You can try PC trans for free to migrate/move any two programs.
It is more of trying out because no program works 100%!

(iii) It is more of trying out the things & find your own truth. So, i would suggest to make and try things on a parallel win 10 installation before making an in place upgrade.

Thanks & Regards. ...

Well,

Much better. 2 out of 3 updates installed. See screen prints in attached .pdf. I rebooted/ "tried again" after image #4 and again after image #8.

(I am curious about images #6 and #10 "0 KB total, 0% complete" when image #5 indicated 244.7 MB needed. )

Let me know what to try next (run SURT?).

Thanks again
