Can Windows 7 network with earlier versions of Windows?


I am trying to network from a Windows 7 Pro computer to an XP Pro one; and I can't get it to work.

I am using Workgroup.

On the Win 7 computer, I can see the XP computer, as well as the My Documents folder I want to access; but when I try to open it, I am denied permission.

I am using Ethernet through a Westell 327w I got from Verizon a few years ago. I updated the firmware. Not sure if it's related, but this router is unable to connect to some webpages sometimes.

It can work. One thing to consider is when you use Homegroup win 7 uses IPv6, and older hardware IPv4. Sometimes this causes trouble. You can test for this by setting up a new network connection and use "workgroup". Work-group uses IPv4.

I am using Workgroup, not Homegroup. It would have been a good idea for me to note that in my Original Post. I edited it in for the benefit with future readers.

Try these settings on the win7 computer




And make sure you have the folders you want shared on the XP computer marked as shared folders.
