I have Window 7 pre installed on a 64 bit Lenovo machine. Is there a way to tell if it was a clean install vs a upgrade?

If you bought that Lenovo brand new, it most likely was a clean install. Upgrades aren't all that obvious sometimes though but issues with them often manifest themselves in very strange ways. But again, if it was new or even refurbished, I seriously doubt it was an upgrade. If you bought it used however, tough to say. Haven't done too many upgrades but from what I've seen, I believe there are folders left over with odd names such as "INPLACE" and some others akin to that.

The reason I asked is I bought a Lenovo Y550 just when Windows 7 came out and it was shipped with Vista instead. Lenovo acknowledged the problem. Machine was sent back for a clean install but I just want to check it was not upgraded like the upgrade disc they sent out but was a total clean install.

If you go to your 'Local Disk' Windows was installed on (normally C : (no space)) and you find a Windows.old folder that definitely means it wasn't a clean install. That folder would of been created if they installed Windows 7 on the same drive as Windows Vista without formatting (via the 'Custom' installation option) which definitely isn't a clean install. Though if they choose the 'Upgrade' installation option, the Windows.old folder wouldn't have necessarily been created. Hope that made sense.
