Hello, I come to this forum as my last beacon of hope before I format and spend my entire summer scavenging for my programs to reinstall all of them.
My laptop, an Asus K55VM, has been giving me severe issues regarding homegrouping. I am unable to edit my Homegroup, view its password or leave it. This computer is where the homegroup was first created. I do not know when this issue started, as I spent a while without modifying anything about my Homegroup and when I tried to once again it was like this.
My Administrator account is the only user account on this laptop.
I have attempted to delete the files under "C:/Windows/ServiceProfiles/LocalService/AppData/Roaming/PeerNetworking" with absolutely no effect on the issue. I did notice something had deactivated my Windows Firewall, but after I reactivated it and made sure it stayed activated through reboots the issue still persisted. The two Homegroup-related rules in both in and outbound connections were disabled, and manually enabling them only appears to last until the Windows Firewall window is closed. This holds true even when disabling my Avast!Pro AV while doing it.
As for Services, I've tried tampering with a few to the point I don't even know what "user" to select for them to Log In as. These are Peer Networking Grouping, Peer Name Resolution Protocol, Peer Networking Identity Manager, Server (and the Services - but not the .xxx Drivers - it depends on), Homegroup Listener, Homegroup Provider and, necessary to its re-enabling, Windows Firewall.
I've managed to get everything to start except Homegroup Listener and Provider using the following Log In properties:
Peer Networking Grouping: Local System account
Peer Name Resolution Protocol: Local System account
Peer Networking Identity Manager: Local System account
Server: Local System account
Windows Firewall: Local Service (with blank password)
I have read both help threads recommending to switch some of these to Local Service and threads saying they should stay assigned to the Local System account with desktop interaction unchecked. I've tried several combinations of L. System account and L. Service, but this is the one that seems to let me enable the most services at once. No matter what I do, however, Homegroup Listener still refuses to start with an error "1079: The account specified for this service is different from the account specified for other services running in the same process." when I set it to Local Service together with Homegroup Provider, and when I switch these two to Local System account it gives me another error message: "Windows could not start the Homegroup Listener on Local Computer. For more information, review the System Event Log. If this is a non-Microsoft service, contact the service vendor, and refer to service-specific error code -2147023817."
As for the Event Log, I can draw no real conclusion from it. Here are the details of the error, in case someone can fish up something else:
