Cool, less to worry about. So I make the two reg edits from Ultimate to Professional and run setup from that extracted iso, select "upgrade" and wait; eventually I will have Win7 Pro (for which keys are much easier to find). Do I need to remove the cfg file from that iso first?

hmmm

removed cfg, made registry edits, launched setup in admin account, select upgrade ....got through "copying windows files" and "gathering files, settings, and programs" in an hour or so, now seems stalled at "expanding windows files (0%)..."

cursor doesn't move, keyboard dead, for past hour

is it safe to hard reset at this point?

Then where would you suggest? There is no "brick-and-mortar" key store in my neck of the woods.

Well, restarted and all seems well, still have Ultimate SP1. Am wondering if there is a log which may indicate what was the issue, before trying again.

Windows setup log file locations - Windows Client | Microsoft Docs

Thanks, windows is like the govt - keeps so many logs and events and reports that i'm rarely sure what I'm seeking, much less what to do with the data once found.

In this case the following warnings/errors appeared in setupact (over 8meg in size, dozens of these entries near the end), and in setuperr (only 10k, but also dozens of the entries); a cursory search for these messages has not been helpful to me, either very generic descriptions, very specific recommendations (particular file on a particular system), or so technical that if I understood I wouldn't be there reading. (At least I got a laugh from the improper English, "does no fit".)

If it's relevant, I ran setup from a "super admin" account, did not select "look for updates", and and unplugged the ethernet cable.

no . you would need a key for win7 pro. They are probably easier to find.

Unfortunately, "This product is OEM, and the license governing the installation and use may not convey the same rights as a full retail package. Prospective purchasers should make themselves aware of any such restrictions before purchasing."

I believe I need a retail key. Will probably have to extend trial period, only three days remaining.

OTOH, success with downgrading to Win7 Pro. Only took fourteen forevers, including a half hour for "net framework 4.5 needs to be repaired".

I believe I need a retail key.

why? You dont get ms support ( except for activation freefone ). Who ever uses ms support ?

I had an oem key on an old machine, then moved it to a somewhat more recent machine. Called the ms activation freefone, no problem.

All my others are retail. Cant tell the difference.

"Who ever uses ms support ?'

Lol. I was convinced a quarter century ago that could be replaced with a single taped comment .... "You need to reinstall windows".

Old, but apt:

There were three engineers in a car ; an electrical engineer, a chemical engineer and a Microsoft engineer. Suddenly the car stops running and they pull off to the side of the road wondering what could be wrong. The electrical engineer suggests stripping down the electronics of the car and trying to trace where a fault might have have occurred. The chemical engineer, not knowing much about cars, suggests maybe the fuel is becoming emulsified and getting blocked somewhere. The Microsoft engineer, not knowing much about anything, came up with a suggestion. "Why don't we close all the windows, get out, get back in, and open all the windows and see if it works?

"3 days until automatic activation"

-rearm doesn't work, still shows three days; all seems to be working well except not activated and DVD drive disappeared;

went from Vista SP2 fully activated/regulated/legislated/whatever, to Win7 Ulitmate activated, to Ultimate SP1 not activated, to Pro SP1 not activated (what an ordeal, lol)

Am told I need a retail key, am told an OEM key will work; may just bite the bullet, call MS, and throw myself on the mercy of the court.

Well, system is working, all software functional, and I didn't lose any registered software (except for windows); so I'm thankful for that. But I have a black screen and the "not genuine" notice; no idea if I need retail or OEM key (wrote to one site asking which they were offering, elicited no response); no idea if sites with keys are reliable (for every review that says one is safe and legitimate another says it is a scam; in fact, some articles state all such sites are scams).

The "rearm" command was accepted, but did nothing. Neither did Reset Windows 7 rearm count | emperial.dk

And I will soon face this idiocy again on a different system with a clean install of Win7 64 from an "anytime update" disk.

You can buy either Windows OEM or Windows Retail as long as you understand what you are buying.

Windows OEM - meant to be installed on one computer only. It is tied to that computer's hardware so can't legally be installed on another computer. If in the future you change enough hardware, i.e, motherboard, and the Windows activation fails you might be able to contact Microsoft and activate Windows manually.

Windows Retail - can be reused multiple times as long as it is only installed and activated on one computer at a time.

About the not genuine message...that means that Windows had not been activated before the 30 day trial period had expired.

You can extend the Windows 7 "30 day trial period" legally up to 3 times to give you a total of 120 days.

Running the CMD prompt as an administrator:
> slmgr -rearm

You can check the result of this with the command

> slmgr /xpr

Note this will also tell you how many counts are left in the rearm counter

Thanks for the clarification. In this instance either key would suffice since any future systems I build will be 64bit (including the one under construction ....the PS and vid card intended for it are currently in this ex-Vista system) and thus need an entirely different key. (I also admit to a misunderstanding of OEM functionality; I thought the key was linked to the manufacturer, so an HP key would not work on a Dell, and vice versa.)

Aware of the "genuine" status, just irritated that Win7 initially was genuine and activated, then when finally got SP1 installed it became a trial version with 30 days to activate.

Already tried that (when had three days left to activate)

slmgr -rearm gave notice of command accepted and to restart, after restart CP>System still showed three days to go;

slmgr -xpr merely gets me "Error: product key not found." (as does -dlv and -dli)

CP>System just has:

"Status Not Available
Product ID: Not available"

A call to MS got me in a loop with their idiot robot phone; it asked for the product ID number, I had to use MGAdiag to find this since it is no longer in CP. I read the first group of numbers and it is not accepted, after several tries the robot tells me this should be six or seven digits ...the number I have is five digits. I'm then given the option to continue (which I'm told will be faster, but in actuality just continues the idiocy about the ID number) or "transfer" to an MS representative, the latter merely gets me a recorded message "Microsoft no longer supports XP. Goodbye", and it hangs up. Several sites said make no selections and a person will eventually answer; apparently no longer, the robot cycles through the "press one for this, press two for that" a few times then says "goodbye" and hangs up.

So I roll the dice and hope I get a reliable online supplier for a key.

I should have clarified Windows OEM. There are two types of Windows OEM. The first is from OEM computer manufacturers like HP and Dell for the computer they make. The second can be bought from a number of sources including Amazon. They were first meant for computer builders to save them money compared to Windows Retail. Now they are commonly bought by anyone who wants to save money.

The next time you do a phone activation of Windows 7 take the advise it gives and let it send your phone a text message. The text message will give you a link. Once you select the link the web page will give you the groups of numbers you need to enter on your computer to complete the activation. This is much better than listening to voice on the phone read the groups of numbers to you.

If I am now "good to go", next step is full backup of OS. (Would be just my luck for the HD to die now, lol.)

FWIW, this concerns me:

File Scan Data-->
File Mismatch: C:\Windows\system32\wat\watadminsvc.exe
File Mismatch: C:\Windows\system32\wat\npwatweb.dll
File Mismatch: C:\Windows\system32\wat\watux.exe
File Mismatch: C:\Windows\system32\wat\watweb.dll
On researching this, I found:

"
File Scan Data-->
File Mismatch: C:\Windows\system32\wat\watadminsvc.exe
File Mismatch: C:\Windows\system32\wat\npwatweb.dll
File Mismatch: C:\Windows\system32\wat\watux.exe
File Mismatch: C:\Windows\system32\wat\watweb.dll
FWIW the File Mismatches present in this system are NOT an error message - simply an indication that the KB971033 is not installed.
Installing the update clears the error becuase it actually creates the C:\Windows\System32\Wat folder.
No system will show as being non-genuine simply by way of not having the update installed."

I have d/l'd that KB file but not installed it; awaiting input here.

Before I continue with updates and making a backup I want to be sure (at least as sure as anything pertaining to Microsoft) that the OS is not going to bite me in the posterior six months or a year from now with "not genuine" notices.

Hi,

your assumptions are correct regarding KB971033, it was/is the standard fix for those errors and the others futher down under Windows activation technologies
ActiveX: Not Registered - 0x80040154 Admin Service: Not Registered - 0x80040154
notes
Reboot TWICE after installing the KB, then run the tool again
As i previously said Valodation is a 2 step process Activation and Registration

The RUNTIME mismatches should dissappear believe MS is currently having server problems and you update your default browser, current is 95 yours is 59

Right back to activation
Its a Technet/MSDN product key, and WERE NOT for resale. MS discontinued their sale many years ago
MS do not block these keys until multiple users start "appearing"
its a case of buyer beware, they do however have a longer, after the event life, 5 rearms instead of 3

Well hell, guess I've been had ...though in their defence they sold me exactly what was advertised - a working Win7 Pro key. But I am curious, if MS blocks the key does that only affect subsequent attempts to use it or would my install suddenly become non-genuine again? (The latter would imply windows is occasionally, if not continuously, in contact with MS; something I will aggressively try to block if true.)

Addendum - have just read MSDN keys expire ...so did I just waste money on an extended trial period?

So I should install this KB? Is this part of the "simplex" file I downloaded a few weeks ago? (I've yet to install that)

"Reboot TWICE after installing the KB, then run the tool again"
Install KB- Reboot- Reboot? or install-reboot-install-reboot?

which tool?

That browser is left over from the Vista install (there's an even older Firefox there also, lol, from before the system was mothballed); I wanted to get windows activation and updates done before attending the rest of t he system.

Hi

info
minor validation checks are performed every time you startup, major validation is performed monthly
these events can be seen in your logs

the key will be blocked as soon as multiple instances are found, and from that point onward any machine using it will turn permenantly non genuine, and any new instances will return a non genuine error code

it depends on the seller, if he's just after money, he'll sell as many as he can in a short period of time, before the any money back guarentee HE provided runs out
if on the other hand he's reputable then there shouldn't be a problem
google is your friend here, if you can find it online its usually a dud., no trace of yours

please install the kb and reboot x2, you only need to input the key once
then rerun the tool aka - Mgadiag
