Cannot see open networks

I purchased a Sony Vaio a few months ago. I accessed my home wireless router with no issues. However that is the only network the computer can see. I have taken it to work, two hotels and the marina where my boat is. The Viao will not see and open network. I have have been tethering off mt EVO which connects to all these networks fine. I don't even know where to start with this. Wish I had my XP back.
I have manually added the networks and move them up the list. with no luck still.

Fixed??? but not understood.

I deleted my Home router from the network list. A netgear. After I did that, the computer was able to see 3 open networks where I am and connect. Does anyone know why. I would like to understand that.
