Cannot Shut Down Windows 7 Properly After Processor Overclock

Hello Everyone!

I have an interesting situation that I would like to run by you and get some help...
I have Windows 7 x64 Ultimate. I have 6 GB DDR3 ram. I used to use an old Intel Core 2 Quad 2.33 ghz processor. No problems. Installed a Core 2 Duo processor at 3.00 ghz to help with games and loading times, etc. After boot, had no problems. Went into BIOS and overclocked the processor successfully to 3.7 ghz. Boots into windows without fail. Ran overclock stability tests, checked out fine, no errors. Ran several games for several hours, no problems. However, here is the problem: When I try to shut down or restart, the computer goes into the shut down screen and then appears to be trying to shut down and then just sits there indefinately. I walk away from the computer and come back later and the computer has rebooted and states that there was a BSOD and and error code. I thought it was maybe from the overclock and started bringing it down in speed. After the speed decrease, it would sucessfully shut down for 3 times and then on the 4th boot, it would not shut down correctly, thus starting the problem all over again. I have not yet brought it back down to the stock 3.00 ghz speed yet to see if that fixes it. I have researched that it is possibly a registry error. What are your thoughts on this issue. and if you simply reset the bios?

Make sure you do not have a temp problem..
Use one or both of following:

CoreTemp http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/
Core Temp monitors CPU temperatures

​

SpeedFan SpeedFan - Access temperature sensor in your computer
monitors voltages, fan speeds and temperatures, shows hard disk temperatures, shows cpu temperatures, supports SCSI, can change fan speeds

Thank you for your reply karlsnooks, I have not yet reset the BIOS either if you think that would somehow affect the shutdown process. I am not getting BSOD anywhere other than the error message stating that the "computer has recovered from a serious error(describing a BSOD...error message code...)" After I confirm the message, I can still use the computer without rebooting indefinately. Temps don't appear to be a problem, as I try to restart as soon as the windows desktop finishes loading and the intensive gaming applications run like a charm without any errors. Any other ideas?

You could try a repair install if the BIOS reset has no effect.

Very well, that is a good point, I have never used a repair install with Windows 7, is it similar to the XP repair or can it be run from within the windows 7 environment?

It HAS to be run from Windows.

Does the system go into sleep mode properly?

I would either clear the board by shutting it down, unplugging the power supply and push the start button or, write down your bios settings, clear the cmos and input the settings that you wrote down. After that I would try to run Prime Blend test for 10 hours to confirm stablity.

You didn't bring it back to stock 3000 speed YET?
That would have been the FIRST thing I would have tried.
