Can't delete old vista partition :/

Windows will not let you delete any partition if there is a swap file on it.
Boot into Vista and remove the swap file, then you will be able to delete the Vista partition.
MachineGun

Coulda fooled me, I booted from the upgrade DVD and deleted my vista that had a perm swap file on it.

Can you not read?
I said you cannot delete the vista partition from within VISTA.
Using a boot disk is not from within Windows.

Yes I can read and all i see is "windows will not let you delete any partition...." nothing about "doing it from within vista".

how would i mark it as active?

sorry for all these questions, its just that i want to be 100% sure

edit: if i dont delete the vista partition and delete the win7 one, then expand the unallocated space to the vista one, then format it and install will it then be active because the vista one was active to begin with

You don't need to worry about what gets marked active and what doesn't. I don't even see how that got into the conversation. You WANT the 100mb partition to be there. It contains the Windows Recovery Environment and will be invaluable to you if you have system problems later on.

Stop getting caught up in all the extraneous stuff that has been discussed in this thread. Partitions really have nothing to do with who has access to what. That is dealt with by user ID within Windows.

Boot on the DVD, remove the existing partitions, install in the unallocated space (bearing in mind this will erase anything on the drive). Set up the users with the abilities you want them to have. VERY simple.

i have not read all the posts in this thread, but this is how i solved this problem.

you can't delete the vista partition as it is your system drive. you need to change your win 7 partition to the system drive first.

go here and download easy bcd 2.0 latest build

EasyBCD 2.0 Beta Builds - The NeoSmart Forums

Just Use EasyBCD 2.0 latest build
diagnostics / change boot drive.

after that if you want to extend the win 7 partition to the old vista partition you should use something like partition wizard as windows will not extend to a drive that is to the left of your existing partition. partition wizard will require you to restart and will do it during boot.

remember to back up all your personal files before you do anything!

good luck!
