I haven't been able to install any updates since jan 11 of this year. I have been on the road for a few weeks and I tried to figure out the problem once I got back.

When a update is being installed it will stall we will say at 95%. I have looked in the log files and this is what I find.
From the Application Log;
Code:
Faulting application name: TrustedInstaller.exe, version: 6.1.7601.17514, time stamp: 0x4ce7989b
Faulting module name: wcp.dll, version: 6.1.7601.17592, time stamp: 0x4da00342
Exception code: 0x80000003
Fault offset: 0x00000000001d448a
Faulting process id: 0x3ec
Faulting application start time: 0x01ccf8bae7fccb80
Faulting application path: C:\Windows\servicing\TrustedInstaller.exe
Faulting module path: C:\Windows\winsxs\amd64_microsoft-windows-servicingstack_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7601.17592_none_672ce6c3de2cb17f\wcp.dll
Report Id: 3a7ff4f9-64ae-11e1-a405-002421577fd5

From the setup log;
Code:
Windows update "Update for Windows (KB2660075)" could not be installed because of error 2149842974 "" (Command line: ""C:\Windows\system32\wusa.exe"
"C:\Users\Les\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\KXQDWOEH\Windows6.1-KB2660075-x64.msu" ")

When I try to run sfc /now or verify only I get this error;
Code:
C:\Windows\system32>sfc /verifyonly
Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.
Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 10% complete.
Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation.
C:\Windows\system32>

I am stumped so any suggestions will be much appreciated.

Thanks
Les

Time for the "real experts" Microsoft to be called in...
Have used them myself.
Found them to be polite & efficient.
Problem was solved too.
See link below.

Good luck!

@JMH,
No backup. I know I am pretty much SOL now. I made the jump to WIN7 right after xmas. then my RAM started dying in January which is when this problem started I think. Was just hoping that there would be a quick fix out there that would work.

Unfortunately it doesn't appear so.
Sometimes it's quicker {& better} to save time /avoid frustration & start afresh.

Was looking thru my event log and I noticed this.
Faulting application name: TrustedInstaller.exe, version: 6.1.7601.17514, time stamp: 0x4ce7989b
Faulting module name: wcp.dll, version: 6.1.7601.17592, time stamp: 0x4da00342

I went looking in winsxs folder and I found 2 different folders these file versions are in

amd64_microsoft-windows-servicingstack_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7601.17514_none_678566b7ddea04a5
and
amd64_microsoft-windows-servicingstack_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7601.17592_none_672ce6c3de2cb17f

the first one was created 12/30/2011 and the other was created 12/27/2011
it looks like a registry problem now, and the trusted installer is being pointed to the wrong folder.
since sfc doesn't seem to work is there another way to correct this entry?

I wouldn't worry too much about teh versioning - they are normal :)
You seem to have a variety of problems, stemming from failing RAM at some point - this means that anything written to the HD during that period is questionable. Your best option, and quickest recovery is almost certain to be a clean install, even if it is painful.

Think yourself lucky - I have to create 6 new VM's and update them (but at least I can do the updating in the pub :) )
Good luck with the reinstall.
