Hello,

This is the story so far:

My pc came together with windows vista home premium but because i didn't like it, i installed win7. Everything worked just fine. I reinstalled it around 15 times to experiment with things like making it unattended and such and still, everything worked just fine. When i had enough of windows 7 and wanted to downgrade back to windows xp, i thought i needed to completely erase my disk which i did using the windows 7 setup. After i inserted my windows xp disc, it never recognized my hd so i tried to go back to Windows 7. When i came to the step where to choose wich hd you want to use to install Windows 7 to it gave the error: Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition.

These are the things i tried to fix it:

- Looked in my motherboard to change ACPI to IDE No such option exists.
- Tried several options using diskpart like formating it in ntfs, assigning the letter A, making it the first volume and disk etc...
- Changing the boot order to boot my hd first.
- Installing Vista again but gave somewhat the same error.

These are some facts:

- Ubuntu installed just fine, I'm currently using it.
- The setup recognized my hd.
- I have no extra disks available.
- My pc came with a hidden partition named PQSERVICE or something of 14.65 GB which i deleted. Windows 7 still installed fine after that.
- I could have forgotten some things i tried to fix it.
- I install windows 7 from an usb formatted as ntfs of 4 GB
- I have no idea how to even install things in ubuntu so no lead there.
- I am not very techy in pc's but i know most of it so i'm willing to experiment.

So long things short:

The problem started right after i used the format hd utility in the Windows 7 setup.

I am very sorry about my crappy English, i hope you could understand most of it.

If someone knows how to fix this or even has an idea to fix it, please i beg you tell me i really miss my pc.

Here are most specs if it helps:

@richc46 I already did this with diskpart, even creating multiple partition under different sorts of fs (Fat32, ntfs) but still the same error.
@Liquidsnak I used the build in format utility from the windows 7 setup.

You already did the "clean all" with diskpart?

Hello steerty, welcome to Seven Forums!

No the 'clean' argument is not at all the same as the 'clean all', the 'clean' just over-writes the Hard Disk Drive (HDD) format data (no better than a regular format) and the 'clean all' over-writes all the data on the entire HDD with zeroes.

Momentus 750 > Diskpart Clean All : did not work

I had no joy with this fix. I've got a new Seagate momentus 750 that Windows 7 tells me it cannot install on hardware. I have installed Fedora 14 and Ubuntu 10.10 on the 750 without issue. On a Windows 7 install it goes through all the motions and after the first OS reboot (Completing installation) ... it comes back with "Cannot install on this Hardware". I slap the 500GB back into the machine and here I am looking for a solution. I wish Windows 7 would spit out a reason for the failure. The error screen doesn't tell me squat. The diskpart clean all took 7 hours to run and did not do the trick. Any other hints?

Solved

Thought I would let everyone know. I downloaded drivers for the ICH9 SATA Chipset (the PRE-OS Driver) and it installed. I did not have this issue with the 500GB. Very strange... the drivers worked and solved the issue ... I can't complain. Thanks. Walt
