I have Windows 7 installed, and want to install xp. After the XP disc copies files to a new partition (to prepare for installation) the computer restarts, as per usual, but then it will not prompt to start the actual installation. It simply "restarts" windows 7. What can I do?

Welcome!

Make sure the CD drive is set to be the first to boot in the BIOS.

From what I read, he has already booted from CD and the XP install copied files to the new partition. It's supposed to then reboot from the hard drive to continue the installation. That seems to be what is not working.

I wonder if he could use EasyBCD 2.0 Beta to add the XP partition to the Win 7 boot menu? If so, then on boot, selecting XP should continue the installation.

Does the XP installer get to the screen where it asks you where you want to install Windows, so that you are able to create and format a partition in the space you made for XP?

If it doesn't make it that far during install, then it likely needs the SATA controller driver added during driver-loading phase using the F6 prompt if you have a floppy drive, or slipstreaming the driver into XP Cd using this method: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/72185-sata-drivers-slipstream-into-windows-xp-cd.html?ltr=S

I have the same problem. I can boot the pc off the CD, and the installation starts fine, finds the harddrives, formats copies the files the reboots and nothing happens. The "Press any key to boot from CD'' appears but nothing happens after that.

I did try the BCDtrick, but no joy. Any other suggestions?
