Hi all,

I upgraded to Windows 7 when it was first released and for some reason cannot use the sleep function. My power options in the control panel are set to "Balanced." I've opened up every menu I can think of and changed the settings but can't figure out why I can only use hibernate. Any ideas?

Thanks Shawn. The command prompt brought up this message:

The following sleep states are available on this system: Hibernate

The following sleep states are not available on this system:
Standby <S1> The system firmware does not support this standby state. The VGAPNP.SYS display driver does not support standby. Please consult your hardware vendor for an updated display driver.
Same thing for S2 and S2.

I attempted to use the command prompt as your link stated to disable hibernation but it said I don't have permission even though I'm the administrator :what:

What's weird is sleep worked fine when I was on Vista. I guess my video driver isn't good enough for 7.

Update your chipset, BIOS and other drivers. Use driver sweeper for the gpu + sound drivers.

Perhaps, but wouldn't the scannow command look for invalid drivers also and try to replace them with a native driver perhaps?

Jay,

Did you use a elevated (run as administrator) command prompt to do it with?

Thanks for the input guys. I ran the scan and it did not find any integrity violations.

Shawn, I didn't (wasn't paying attention) but did now. It successfully took the hibernate option away but Sleep was still greyed out.

If it makes a difference, some of the new Windows 7 Features like Aero haven't worked. When I search "aero" on the comp, it runs a diagnostic and comes up with "The current video card may support Aero with a driver that is compliant with the Windows Display Driver Model (WDDM). Contact the manufacturer of your computer or video card for a WDDM-compatible driver."

I contacted Sony to see if there are any updated drivers but there aren't.

Don't take manufacturer's tech support word for anything. Double check with Google.

Become so familar with your graphics card via Googling that you know it's drivers off the top of your head, trying each in each compatibility mode.

Same with your BIOS updates. Error seems to point to vid driver but be sure BIOS is current.

Have you checked Windows Updates lately? They are very good with drivers, since MS funded the partnership (WHQL) which developed them with most manufacturers.

Update your chipset, BIOS and other drivers. Use driver sweeper for the gpu + sound drivers.

So driver sweeper from guru3d.com is safe?

Thanks Greg. I am up to date with all of the windows updates. I'll Google the video drivers now.

I do not personally recommend any driver update programs. Use your Google and the manufacturer's download pages for your computer model and video card maker.

So I did some intense googling and apparently found the correct drivers because I know have Sleep and the new Aero tricks. Very happy right now. Thanks a lot guys.

Is there a reason to disable Hibernation completely now that I have Sleep? I'm curious since the link I was given discusses how to disable hibernation, I'm wondering what the need would be to disable it when you can just ignore it and choose Sleep.

This is mostly a matter of user preference.

Here is the way I would describe your choice: Would you like to have the luxury of walking away from your computer and having it sleep after 30 minutes so that you only need to hit "return" to wake it up to all the programs you left open? And it uses only as much power to keep your programs in RAM?

If so, would you like to have the further luxury of having your computer go into hibernation where it then shuts itself down after an hour total, but saves all of your programs left open by writing them to HDD, and later starts back up quicker to those programs? You also don't ever have to worry about turning it off this way because it uses no power to hibernate.

Thanks guys for all the info. What's funny is I updated a bunch of drivers and for some reason can no longer control the volume from the volume buttons on the keyboard haha. A new saga begins...

Go into the keyboard driver tab in Device Manager and roll back that driver. The newer one will still be stored to find through other prompts there.
