Hello everyone...I have a older system with win 7 pro 64 bit upgraded from xp pro. I have 2 internal drives C and D drives. I was prompted by windows to back-up and replace d>drive because it was failing. This is were my problem lies.

For whatever reason there is a folder on this drive titled windows and it appears to be a copy of the operating system. I can't delete this folder or format the drive to get rid of it. I spoke to the techs at western digital and he told me that i would have to load the operating system on this new d> drive in order for it to work....So i installed the new drive in the computer and then i get the black screen telling to change the booth sequence which I do...........then put disk ( I assume it means the O/S) in drive and then press any key........I hear it spin up and after that nothing happens, nothing at all....Can anyone please help me with this, it been almost 2 weeks trying to fix this problem?:(

Because of this I also have tried to create a system image to my external drive which is NG too! The backup is trying to make me back-up both c and d> drives which I don't really need to do, just need the image of the c>drive but can't unchecked the box for the d>drive. The end result after about 5 attempts is a bunch of errors concerning the folder (0x80780034) for this back-up...I honestly think it has something to do with the d>drive..

Once again if anyone can help, a big thanks in advance............Jim

Clarify a few things:

You mention having an internal C and an internal D drive. Are these in fact 2 separate drives, or are they simply 2 partitions on one drive?

If they are in fact 2 separate drives, will the PC boot with the D drive disconnected?

What is the purpose of the D drive?

You mention "installed the new drive". I assume this is intended as a replacement for D and am wondering why a WD tech would tell you to install Windows on it? Windows wants to be on C.

You mention trying to make a system image. With what application?

Off the top of my head, if I had 2 separate drives (C for Windows and D for whatever) and D failed, I'd simply swap in a new D and Windows would immediately recognize it.

Answer as best you can and post a screen shot of Windows Disk Management if you can boot at all.

You have something on the old D drive that`s needed to create the backup, this should not be.

You must have had a problem in the past and did a startup repair or something and it wrote system files to the D drive, when you pull it, windows won`t boot.

You need to mark the C Windows drive active and run startup repair until windows boots again.

To answer the few questions....both drives were suppose to be separate...and the system wont booth when i take it out. the black screen telling me booth sequence and then put in disk and press any key...its the same as mentioned before....

How do I go a back marking the c>drive as active and then run start up repair??? This is probably I need to do.......
