Solved Can't restart with desktop icon.

When I use the desktop icon to restart, it just sits there ( circle keeps revolving).

The only way is to use the computer restart button.

Any advice?

Hello Paul,

Sounds like you have something still running in the background that is hanging the shut down process up.

Did you close all programs and windows before restarting?

You might check to see if you may have had Windows Updates in the process of downloading and/or installing at the time you clicked on restart.

If it continues to do this after you do restart, you should be able to use the force restart shortcut below.

......You could use the tutorial to troubleshoot with a clean startup to see if you may be able to ID the culprit by testing to restart normally (not the shortcut) between steps.

Thanks, as usual, for your quick response.

I'll follow your advice.

I always click "stop all programs now" ( or something similar), but it doesn't help and to my knowledge nothing like updates is running since I do them manually.

Hey Shawn,
I downloaded the file and the comp now restarts in 5 secs.

Also, I had been following a thread on this site http://www.sevenforums.com/performance-maintenance/592-reboot-time-194.html
and my restart times were in the 50 sec range - Now 37 secs!

Just a quick question: Since this is just a shortcut, why does it work so much better than the desktop icon?

Or is it a completely different program?

Restart from the Start Menu only restarts the PC, but doesn't force the restart.

The shortcut has the /f switch added to it to force a restart. Anything the hangs as shut down is forced closed by the /f switch.
