The SFC scan managed to repair some of the errors - this is what remains...

The file missing error is unusual - and is sometimes caused by mistaken attempts to clean up duplicate files.

I'll post a fix protocol for these errors a bit later

I've uploaded a file - hznaa.zip - to my SkyDrive at Noel's SkyDrive
Please download and save it.

Right-click on the saved file and select Extract all...
Change the target to C:\ and click on Extract
Close all windows (it would be a good idea to print these instructions!)

Now reboot to the Repair Environment - as soon as the machine restarts, start tapping F8 - this should bring up the Advanced Boot Menu, at the top of which should be the option 'Repair my Computer'
Pick that
You'll have to log in with your username and password.

Pick the option to use a Command Prompt
At the prompt type
DIR C:\hznaa
hit the enter key - if you get a 'Not Found' error try
DIR D:\hznaa
or
DIR E:\hznaa

The drive letter in use when you find the folder will need to be substituted (for<drive>) into the following command...

XCOPY <drive>:\hznaa <drive>:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h

(e.g. XCOPY P:\wfire P:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h )

run the command (it should take almost no time) and when the prompt returns, type
EXIT
and hit the Enter key to exit Command Prompt - reboot to Normal Mode Windows.

Now run SFC /SCANNOW in an Elevated Command Prompt
then reboot and upload the new CBS.log file to your reply

I'm not sure exactly how to get to the web site you mentioned to download hznaa.zip Please provide a bit more information on how to get there and find that file.

Well I thought I followed your instructions but I don't think the results are what was expected so I'll list the steps I followed and maybe you can see what went wrong.

I downloaded the file, right clicked and selected Extract and placed the 33KB file hznaa at C:\

Rebooted to the Advanced Boot Menu and selected Repair My Computer, logged on and ended up with the path x:\Windows\System, At the prompt entered DIR C:\hznaa then
Entered XCOPY C:\hznaa C:\windows\winsxs /y/i/s/v/h Results 0 files copied

That didn't seem what I should have gotten and when I returned to the Normal Mode Window to try the search for updates, same error I originally got. Didn't run SFC

You MUST run SFC - it fixes the file hardlinks if necessary.
Please post eh new CBS.log file after running SFC.

I should have been a bit clearer in my message. I did run SFC and the error message upon completion was the same Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. That was the reason I went back and tried the Windows Update again. View attachment 306034

Here are some instructions to make life easier :)
1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the ECP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.
2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Window, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.
3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.

Instructions were a bit confusing. After highlighting and copying the commands then going to the CP I found there was no paste command. If the steps were suppose to add the hznaa folder and its 4 folders to C:\windows\winsxs I did do that and ran SFC. There still appears to be corrupted files. the CBS file is attached,View attachment 306239

I'm having some problems running the commands you listed. I was able to copy the commands from your message, paste them in CP using the right click but as soon as they got there the whole thing ran. When I reviewed the results the 1st command listed all of the folders found in hznaa were listed but the 2nd command resulted in file not found. I wish there was some way of copying the CP results since you know what should appear. After the file not found entry each of the 4 hznaa folders was listed. The first and second command showed no files, the third command ran twice the second time it listed a lot of files, the 4th command ran twice again and the second time had one file, timedate.cpl

I than ran SFC but all it did was list the SFC options. CBS didn't appeared in Windows\ Log.

I don't have any problems understanding how to send the CBS.zip file and have done so on several occasions already. The reason one wasn't included in my last message is because after following the latest instructions a CBS log file didn't appear on the desktop so apparently I misread some instruction.

I have decided to start all over again using the first set of instructions and will list each instruction and its result. It would be helpful to me if when you send instructions some information on what it is to accomplish would be helpful so when I view the results I would know I'm on the right track. You might start by explaining just what hznaa is all about. I assume the steps you have sent are intended to fiix the corrupted files in my system. Now for the individual steps and their results including minor corrections needed to make them work.

Download and save hznaa.zip File downloaded and saved in the Download Folder.
Right-click on saved file and select Extract. No Extraction command available. Should read Left-click to take you to Windows Explorer where a Right-click produces the Extract All command.
Change target to C:\ and Extract. Extraction completed and C:\ now contains file folder with 4 subfolders.
Reboot to Advance Boot menu, Pick on Repair my Computer. Windows loading files
Use Command Prompt and type DIR C:\hznna. 4 folders appear.
XCOPY C:\hznaa C:\Windows\winsxs /y/i/s/v/h. 4 files copied
Exit from Command Prompt, reboot to Normal Mode.
Run SFC /SCANNOW in elevated command prompt. SFC took much longer to run. Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repair them.
Reboot and upload the new CBS.log file

Unfortunately the same unable to search for Windows Updates still exist. It rather late so I'll complete the second set of instruction tomorrow and forward the results.

I ran SFC and the remarks at the end stated, Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

Tried to do the search for updates but still have the same error

Tried a couple of things I found on the internet, Microsoft Fixit for the problem but it found nothing.

Tried Windows update automated trouble shooter and it listed Windows Update error 80070490 as not fixed. Problems installing recent updates, not fixed, Check for missing or corrupt files Detected with a triangle with the number 1 in it and a couple other minor error that were fixed.

The 0490 error can be extremely difficult to solve - it often indicates registry corruption easiest cured by a repair install :(

Please post a new CBS.log file, and also the C:\Windows\windowsupdate.log file

Can't search for updates

This proved to be a very difficult problem to solve and although I tried all of the Microsoft FixIt programs and suggestions from other users, nothing worked. The best I could do was install the commercial program Reimage which corrected several items and got me as far at being able to search and identify the number of updates available but couldn't download and install any. Finally ended up with a total mess, couldn't even get the Start function to work so had no choice but to re-install Windows 7. Should have done that on day one and saved myself a lot of frustration.
