A friend asked to ubdate win7 to win10 on her computer and half way through, the updater asked to turn off bitlocker to proceed. A part of the hard drive is encrypted with it. She doesn't even know what it is, so she can't help with the password. Her sons also say that they don't know a thing about it, so I don't have a password. I googled it and read that it's possible to just turn off Bitlocker, but I couldn't find the place anywhere. Now I looked, that she has win 7 Home Premium, the OS was recently changed, is it possible that she previously had win 7 ultimate and with the OS changing the encrypted part stayed? But with home premium I can't turn it off, there's no place in control panel. I hope the story is understandable, what can I do? Can I disable bitlocker somehow?

Hello and welcome Mercuri now hard to say if the Bitlocker stayed because it depends on how the drive was set up - for example did the Home version get installed over the Ultimate install or did the person doing the install clean the drive before the clean install? It is possible I suppose that the encrypted partition if thta what it is was left untouched by the clean install.

Now personally before I clean install any drive I use the DISKPART process and clean or better but longer clean all - it completely wipes the drive of everything leaving the drive as it came new - unallocated.

Now I know this is a pain but I think if it were me I would clean all the drive and then reinstall - sorry but only way of making sure that the install is unblemished.

That is unless another member has a better way to do it.
