Solved Can't update, error 80070308

Thanks, but would a repair install mean I'd need to reinstall games & softs?

Hey NoelDP,

The problem is no longer relevant. I'll explain myself :
Yesterday I uninstalled kaspersky AV (the licence had ended) and tried to install Avast.
Then I had a BSOD during the installation of Avast. I think it was because just after uninstalling KAV, I didn't reboot.
Thing is, Windows wouldn't reboot, even in safe mode. It couldn't repair the boot too. Sfc didn't work, chkdisk saw a lot of errors but it didn't work either after that. Finally I just reinstalled windows (sob, lost all my apps and games!).
Funny thing too, I only saw the W7 I installed was a 32bits distribution so I just ended up downloading W8.1 x64 from my School's Dreamspark.
I'll install it tonight, but, well, normally I shouldn't have any more windows update problems at least!

Thanks a lot for helping me through this though it ended up this way, I appreciated a lot!

But it's a brand new SSD! And when I say a lot of errors it's only because it found a lot of orphan files, i don't know if that's really applicable...

...still worth checking. Somehting like 5% of HDs are DOA - I don't know what the numbers are like for SSDs.

Not sure what I'm supposed to use since it's a SSD. Seatools seems to be for HDDs?

Check with your drive manufacturer for any tool they may have - I agree, Seatools isn't any use for SSD's

Alright, got Sandisk SSD toolkit, but apart from SMART data it doesn't seem to give anything (SMART state is PASSED).

That's better than nothing - I'll see if any of the hardware guys know the best way.
What's the make and model of SSD? - presumably the SanDiskSDSSDHP256G from your specs?

Have you made sure the firmware for the SSD is up to date? I'm not familiar with SanDisk, but their toolbox should have something to tell you the health of the drive. It may also have a firmware update function also. Most of the SSD Tool Boxes do.

Yes it has it but I'm a bit paranoid about the whole "if there's some problem your ssd won't be usable anymore"

Yes, that's a standard CYA statement made by all of them. The same with BIOS updates. They tell you to update the firmware to resolve problems then say stuff like that. I have 8 SSDs by different manufacturers and they all say the same thing. But, the only reason they come out with firmware updates is usually to resolve problems they have identified with the SSD. So, you make the decision, but I would update it. But, in the end, it's your decision to make.

Just out of curiosity you mentioned the Kaspersky licence was running out and a little later mentioned Comodo so how many AV's have you running.

Now as along time user of Kaspersky I can tell you it will NOT "play" with other AV's without problems - the only one real time AV that it will tolerate is Malwarebytes but even that has a problem to get going but does run.

As for using Seatools for an SSD I found this
My Solid State Drive may be defective, how can I test it? whether this pertains to Seagate SSD drives only I am not sure
