Hi Gang

My original Win 7 dumbed on me and I could not recover it so had to do a complete Win 7RC install. Since then I cannot get my 2 DVD drives to show up. There is power to them but when you click on computer only the HD shows up. This Win 7RC install is on a separate computer. My other computer runs XP SP3. If you want to share printers on both computers should you be in Workgroup or Homegroup.?

Any and all help appreciated.

Thanx........Gunny

hey gunny
Im an oldtimer so im not that fond of homegroup it seems like whenever I have tried to get xp and win 7 to talk it wasn't in homegroup. As far as your missing dvd's are concerned did you enable them in BIOS as bootible devices?

Hope this points you in the right direction

Do you have disks in the DVD drives? There's a setting in the Folder view options that does not show empty drives.

Hi Gunny,

Can you tell us about your system?

What make/model PC or motherboard?

Are these SATA or IDE/PATA drives?

Do they show up on the BIOS / are they listed at boot time?

Do they show up on the Control Panel/Device Manager? Are there any unknown devices with a "?"

If you're familiar with the Storage/Disk Management console, do they show up there, with drive letter assigned?

Thanks,

DJ

They're in Device Mgr as DVD drives and no problems (in properties it says Device is working properly, driver looks good, have a tab for Region), and do not show up at all in Storage / Disk Management? Not even without a drive letter? You really sure? Sorry, need to double check! That's extremely weird.

Hi Gunny,

Can we more info on what the properties in the device mgr says (double-click on the devices to pop-up the properties). Are they recognized as actual DVD drives? What does it say on the first tab in Device Status?

So they are probably connected OK, but maybe the system has a problem maybe at the BIOS level - can we get some info on your BIOS setup? What other SATA or IDE drives are attached?

DJ

PS - what is your current BIOS rev? In case you need this:

To identify your current BIOS version, check the BIOS version string:
1. During boot, enter the BIOS setup by pressing F2.
2. Check the Main menu.
3. The 4-digit number after the '86A' or ‘86I’ is the current BIOS version, as in this example:

MQ96510H.86A.
1663.2007.0319.1957
4. Press Escape to exit BIOS Setup.

The Sata DVD drive is connected ok, on same ribbon as the HD, and it is working ok. The IDE is on a ribbon by itself and it is plugged into the MOBO ok, and into the drive ok. Same ribbon used for long time, on both drives too.

Gunny,

Yeah, there's something more basic at work here, possibly at the BIOS level. You might try disconnecting first one then the other drive and see if set up like that you can see that one.

Can we get some more BIOS info?

BIOS Rev?

Is the SATA storage set up as Native / Compatible or such? Or as RAID or AHCI?

Any other BIOS storage settings available?

In the boot section, are they both options you can select, and if so can you boot from them with a Windows disk or such?

Sorry for the laundry list ...

DJ

Edit: I need to go do some stuff but "Ahh be back ..." :)

Since you are getting a drivere corrupted or missing why not re-install them both. You might have to un-install then re-install to clear out the corruption.
